We had an interesting time visiting the museum....informative, knowledge-packed, great for visiting by students/children and adults alike. Thank goodness I didn't find this place boring.

I always found Australian history boring back in my school days. However, the guide at the museum presented the history of the convicts in an interesting light. Enjoyed my time here.

$12 adult, cheaper for students, children, and retirees. If you are really interested, expect 2-2.5h visit. If you're just curious expect 1-1.5h. Free audio tour was super well made and exists in about 6 different languages. One of the better historical museums I've been to. I'm also the kind of person that usually don't think that it's worth paying entry for museums, but in the this case it was well worth it. It's basically a densely informational crash course of the city of Sydney, the convict settlements, how it really worked out in practice, and their relationship with the Aboriginals. All with the basis of this building where most convicts and many female asylum seekers started out in Sydney. I highly recommend this museum at any time of the day.

Great place for adults and kids the interactive commentary device is great for providing additional information to the exhibition. For kids, the place gives out little fun quize booklet which my younger sister had fun finishing and got a small reward for finishing also the interactive touchscreen around most exhibition is fun for them too.

Cool place to learn about the early history of Sydney. Great tour!

The museum is small, but full of good information. It's a must visit if you are interested in learning more about the city's history. They offer discounts for students.

User

Best museum! I recommend doing the tour, the guide was very knowledgable and friendly. Really cool how they've restored the inside in different areas to how the building looked at different stages of history

User

So much to learn about! Well organised museum with great audio tour. Really worth a visit :)

User

Great! Staff were helpful and gave a great introduction! Shop next door and very interesting place with a fantastic stories!

This is a fascinating museum, very well thought out and presented. The self-guided audio tour, the artifacts and exhibits, and the printed placards in each room, work well together, making the education and "feel" for the subject matter very enjoyable and accessible. The fact that it all takes place in the actual historic building (rather than in a separate museum), adds to the experience. Kudos, Hyde Park Barracks Museum!

User

Good place to learn about convict history. I must admit I was expecting a bit more... once you are in the only interaction you have is with the exhibit, on your own. Could benefit from guides in each area to set the mood and provide the one-on-one experience to make it really special.

Admission costs as much as the Sydney Museum, which was surprising. There is a student discount though, and the exhibits are well-done. You'll get a broad yet detailed overview of Sydney's early years. You'll also find stories of various building occupants reconstructed from old documents. The historic building itself holds much of the appeal.
