A sad day for press freedom in Myanmar as two journalists jailed for seven years after being set-up by police and charged under draconian law. The IFJ said: "Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo remain victims to an entrapment scam by police. Their arrest and persistent detention is deplorable violation of international rights, raising concern about the increasingly oppressive authorities in Myanmar silencing critical expression. This verdict demonstrates just how the military apparatus pressure to repress critical voices has been overbearing on the courts and restricted their ability to adjudicate impartially.”

Freedoms are won. They are not granted by being compliant. They certainly do not come from conformance. Nor from operating within the limits circumscribed by the oppressor. They come from courage and resistance; and eschewing these values, as history has taught us, is the first step towards creating a hotbed for tyranny.

Journalists are the eyes and ears of the public, reporting on crimes alleged to have been committed by ordinary citizens and high-profile figures. Putting up barriers makes it harder for the media to hold the judiciary and the state to account.
