Award winning restaurant Il Cacciatore specialises in Northern Italian cuisine and is located in the heart of Hunter Valley wine country at Hermitage Lodge. Il Cacciatore opens at 6pm nightly and generally takes their last reservation mid week at 8pm.
Il Cacciatore Restaurant Description
Hermitage Lodge’s award-winning restaurant ‘Il Cacciatore’ specialises in Northern Italian inspired cuisine. Il Cacciatore has long been a favourite with visitors and locals alike. The ambience is relaxed and casual and the service is professional, friendly and attentive.
The North of Italy is home to the world-famous white truffle, Parmesan cheese, Parma ham, Balsamic vinegar, Barolo and Chianti wines, and of course, it produces some of the finest olive oils in the world. Our menu embraces all Northern Italy has to offer. Some menu items have been simplified or adapted to today’s taste and way of life, then carefully tested and ‘tasted’.
The key to good Italian food is freshness. There are no second bests and no Italian chef would even contemplate preparing a dish without the best quality, freshest ingredients. The seasonal menu takes advantage of fresh local produce, authentic Italian ingredients and house made pastas. Il Cacciatore is fully licensed, with full bar service, and a wine list showcasing some of the Hunter’s best wines.
Il Cacciatore also has a second dining area and a spacious adjoining deck, which overlooks the landscaped reed-lined lake. Perfect for al fresco dining, it is also available for private dinners or cocktail parties.
Adjacent to the restaurant is the cosy guest lounge featuring plush sofas and an open fire during winter where diners can enjoy a pre-dinner drink or after dinner coffee and port.
Il Cacciatore is open for dinner nightly from 6 p. m. Il Cacciatore is not open for lunch however is available for private functions during the day. Reservations are strongly recommended. Guests are advised that the restaurant is not BYO.
Il Cacciatore has a children’s menu which is available for 6pm and 6. 30pm reservations only.
Reviews
Booked 3 days in advance by phone, but the booking was not there when we turned up. They tried to make up for it by giving us a glass of wine and nibbles while we waited for a table.
A bit awkward service.
All pastas and gnocchi’s are drenched in either butter or cream.
They surprised us with a complimentary nougat with candles and sang happy birthday to my husband when we asked for the bill.
So in essence, they try, but the food just isn’t any good.
Meal was amazing.... although mains came out too quickly! Staff accommodating and view was serene. Definitely will be back....
Good food and very prompt service. Recommend the chicken bosciaola. Can get noisy if a couple of groups are dining.
Went with my friend for the first time last night for dinner and we had the best meal. From the rosemary n garlic focaccia to the prawn n chorizo linguine where the prawns were big, fresh n firm. In other words, just right! Price was what I would expect from any good quality restaurant. Would definitely go again!

Myself and the wife love this place and always come back when we travel up from Sydney to the Hunter, with tonight being our fourth visit. The food is great. The service is friendly and efficient. Last time we were here we were marooned due to a mess up by the local taxi company and the owner's son was more than willing to give us a lift back to our hotel. Sophia is also great and is a credit to the restaurant and the team. Thanks guys, will be back again next time we are in Hunter!
We loved the meals here. They were hearty and perfect for winter and there is a homey feel to the space. Excellent wines as well, as you would expect in this region. Ideal if you want a casual but highly satisfying night out.
Well a few reviews were a bit damning. But we found it pretty good. Not dirt cheap but quite fair value. So: recommend.
