Active Ageing is as much about the social aspect as the physical. Jill was reluctant to try our Wellness Gym classes but now credits it with giving her newfound confidence, balance and great friends! “I’m not falling anymore and I don’t need to use my lift chair or walking stick”, said 73 year old Jill. Active Ageing for 78 year old, Des is about his and his wife Alice’s, wellbeing. Des stays active in the Gorokan Wellness Centre Gym while Alice enjoys the centre’s dementia support activities. As Alice’s primary carer, Des found he wasn’t able to play golf and go walking when Alice’s dementia progressed. He wanted to improve his strength to lift Alice, if needed, and stay well to look after her. “I feel stronger and happier coming to the gym. I can lift my arms above my head for the first time in 20 year and I love that I get to see Alice laughing and having fun,” said Des. Exercising the body and mind is what Active Ageing Week is all about! After Val's husband unfortunately passed away, she decided she wanted to stay active and independent and coming to our Wellness Gym helps her do that.
“My daughters have commented that I now walk more confidently. The Wellness programs have helped me exercise my mind too; I’ve learned to use my computer and love to watch painting demonstrations”. #activeaging #seniorhealth Active Ageing Australia

Did you know its Active Ageing Week? For 70 year old Colleen, Active Ageing means managing the effects of a stroke she had when aged in her 30s. Especially during the winter months, Colleen found it difficult to get out and about and socialise. “If I didn’t come to the gym twice a week, I would be sitting at home doing nothing, but instead I’m having a great time staying active,” said Colleen. “The other day, I stood unaided at the gym for two minutes – it’s something I couldn’t do before – and all my gym friends and staff applauded me!”. #activeaging #seniorhealth Active Ageing Australia
