About K-12 Inclusion

The aim of the national K-12 Inclusion Project is to raise awareness of disability and promote inclusion in schools.

K-12 Inclusion Description

The Included Kids Project is about making sure children with disability are included in school life. We will be undertaking a national search for examples of good practice on how kids with disability can be included in the education and social life of schools. When we have identified the great things people are doing to better include kids with disability at school we will conduct further testing by running some trials.

After the trials we will get more feedback to determine the best approaches and then we will share what we have learned with the rest of the nation. We will do this by creating an accessible framework and toolkit so that we can all ensure children with disability are included, involved and connected to their school lives.

The aim of K-12 Inclusion is to support and promote new and existing practical solutions to inclusion. While we recognise that there are many systemic issues that prevent children with disability being more involved in school life, K-12 Inclusion is focused on shining the light on innovative and practical ways people are addressing the barriers to inclusion.

K-12 Inclusion is guided by the principles embedded in UN Convention on the rights of the child, UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities and UN Article 24: Right to inclusive education. Working closely with recognised experts in inclusive education, K-12 Inclusion activities seek to impact inclusive education that does not segregate alienate or isolate children with disability from or within the mainstream education system. We look to models, practices and approaches of inclusiveness that support the child’s involvement in mainstream education. Our aim is for an education system that aligns with the ideals implicit in the NDIS including to create inclusive and participatory communities that support people with disability.

Funded by the NDIS through the Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) – ILC National Readiness Grants
