About Kirketon Road Centre

KRC is a health service in Kings Cross, focused on the prevention of HIV, hepatitis and STIs among young people, sex workers and people who inject drugs.

Kirketon Road Centre Description

The Kirketon Road Centre (KRC) is a targeted primary health care service with a team of nurses, doctors, counsellors and health educators who work together to meet the wide range of health and social welfare needs of young people, sex workers and people who inject drugs. KRC operates from two locations; above the Darlinghurst Fire Station and 180 Victoria Street, Potts Point.
You can just drop in anytime or make an appointment to use KRC’s services, which are free, anonymous and confidential. You don't need personal ID or need to use your real name or even have a Medicare card.
KRC believes that ’at risk’ young people, sex workers and people who inject drugs have traditionally had sub-optimal access to health care, and that health is a basic human right. KRC operates under a primary health care philosophy providing services that are accessible, acceptable, affordable and equitable. [WHO, Alma Ata 1978]

KRC has a non-judgmental and eclectic approach to individual clients' health care needs and is respectful of clients' lifestyle choices. The service is client-focused and promotes client empowerment and self-determination. While clients' lifestyle choices are respected, there is an emphasis on providing evidence based information about risks involved and how to prevent and reduce associated harms to ensure these choices are well-informed. This is referred to as the ‘harm reduction’ approach [Buning, EC, 1986] .
