Kumon Australia & New Zealand

About Kumon Australia & New Zealand

Kumon offers individualised maths and English programmes that help develop strong academic skills in children of all ages with the aim of nurturing confident self-learners.

Kumon Australia & New Zealand Description

Imagine a classroom where every child is learning something different. Imagine every child is given what they are ready to learn next. Imagine the most advanced students are adequately stretched and the least advanced properly supported. Imagine instruction is targeted to the individual and the common denominator is progress. Imagine that. Toru Kumon did.

It all began in 1954 when Toru Kumon saw his son was falling behind in maths. Toru believed that the work of an educator is to foster a mindset for self-learning in children and so he began creating learning materials for his son, allowing him to work comfortably with the materials each day, steadily developing his skills.

The Kumon Method is an individualised learning method. The starting point for each Kumon student is determined individually in order to match the material to the current ability of the child. The Kumon worksheets have been designed in a way that allows students to figure out how to solve problems on their own. If students continue to study at their own pace, they will catch up with their school grade level and eventually advance far beyond it.

Through the Kumon Method we aim to foster sound, capable individuals who can succeed in achieving their goals in life.

The most in-demand jobs of the future currently only exist in our imaginations. That doesn’t mean we can’t prepare for them now.

Q. What is the right age for my child to start Kumon?
A: There is no minimum age for enrolment in Kumon. Our students range in age from preschoolers to high school students and in some cases adults. It is of great benefit if students have experience using a pencil, however, we also offer Pencil Skills programmes for young ones. To learn if your child is ready to start Kumon, simply contact your local Kumon Instructor and they’ll happily help you out.

A. Who is Kumon for?
Q. Kumon is for students of all ages and abilities. Common reasons families come to Kumon is to help their children regain confidence in maths or English or to extend their child's natural academic talents. Increasingly, parents are coming to Kumon while their children are in preschool to establish a habit of learning. By doing a little each day they help ensure their children start school with confidence.

Q. What role do parents play in their child's Kumon Programme?
A. As Kumon is primarily a home-based study programme, parents are given the opportunity to greatly enhance their child’s progress by supporting their home learning. This support changes from family to family and Kumon Instructors can advise parents based on their individual circumstances. Some Kumon Parents use Kumon as a tool to teach their children the value of practice, responsibility and forming good habits.
