What is Yerba Maté?
Yerba Maté (Ilex paraguariensis) is a perennial tree native to the subtropical highlands of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. This highly nutritious nature’s super food was first introduced to colonizing and modern civilizations by the Guarani Indians of these regions, who for centuries have enjoyed the benefits of this plant as sustaining natural energy and general well being.
The drink is traditionally brewed from the dried leaves and stem lets of the maté tree and consumed hot as a tea through a calabash gourd and a “bombilla” (silver straw). For the last 50 years however, Yerba Mate has been widely consumed throughout the more tropical areas of Brazil as a cold beverage, especially roasted!
