Moonlight And Chocolate Description

WOOL SCULPTURE

noun: sculpture
1. the art of making two- or three-dimensional representative or abstract forms.
• a work of art made by sculpture.

verb: sculpture
1. make or represent (a form) by carving, casting, or other shaping techniques.

The medium used in the creation of these pieces is wool (rather than clay, stone, wood or cast-metal); the sculpting tool is a single-point felting needle. As with any sculpture, these carefully crafted items should be viewed as art-collectibles, not toys. They are not suitable for, nor intended for, young children.

CREATING A WOOL SCULPTURE
The art of needle felting involves stabbing a specialised needle into wool batting or rovings, thousands and thousands of times, eventually causing the microscopic barbs of the wool to matt together to create a solid shape. This is followed by some very fine detailing to create facial features etc.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CREATE A SCULPTURE?
Most of my sculptures begin with a wire armature. I prefer this method as it creates stability and form, and allows me to reshape poses as I work, until I’m happy with a particular stance or head-tilt. The armature is then wrapped in core wool which gives me a platform to stab coloured wool into and add more detailed shaping. Completing this stage often consumes the best part of a weekend!

The process of adding colour and shade, applying facial features and refining shape and contour is typically done over several evenings. Creating a spotted coat or layering on wool-rovings for a long-haired look takes several more hours. The total time can vary enormously but it's rarely less than 25-30 hours for a regular sized short-coated animal.
Yes, achieving a finished product does take endless hours of perseverance, but the time spent is immensely enjoyable and the results are extremely rewarding.

WHAT ABOUT PRICING?
The price of each sculpture certainly doesn’t compensate the time I invest in its creation; but such compensation is not what motivates my work and I strive to keep my pricing extremely competitive. My motivation comes from the joy each sculpture brings its new owner, particularly those who have commissioned a specific piece from me and have followed the creative journey as their custom sculpture takes shape.

Please feel free to chat, message, email or call with any other questions you may have about my sculptures.
