About National Breast Cancer Foundation

Since we started in 1994, NBCF has invested over $162 million in an incredible 514 Australian breast cancer research projects – all thanks to people like YOU.

National Breast Cancer Foundation Description

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is the only national body that funds life-changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public. Breast cancer is the most common life-threatening cancer facing Australian women, with approximately eight women dying from the disease each day — mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and friends.

Research is the only way to improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated. By funding only world-class research, NBCF is working towards a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

NBCF research has helped develop better therapies, greater understanding of possible ways to stop the spread of breast cancer to other areas, and improved quality of life for patients and their families. Since 1995 we have awarded more than $140 million to 479 Australian-based research projects to improve the health and well-being of those affected by breast cancer. With no Government funding, this money has been raised entirely by the Australian public.

Our goal is that by 2030, there will be zero deaths from breast cancer, a goal that would see more women (and men) living longer with breast cancer, and empower them with a greater quality of life. While more women are surviving an initial diagnosis of breast cancer — nine out of 10 women are alive five years after their diagnosis — If their breast cancer has spread, or has metastasised at first diagnosis, the survival rate is alarmingly low with only one in four (a quarter) of women still alive 5 years after diagnosis. There is still much work to be done.

We are proud to raise and grant funds exclusively for research, because we believe research is the most effective way to end breast cancer. We are committed to funding innovative research — from finding better ways to detect breast cancer earlier, to figuring out what causes breast cancer cells to spread, so we can work out how to stop it.

Every dollar helps NBCF move closer towards zero deaths from breast cancer.

Almost 50 years ago, Kate’s mum Kathleen died from breast cancer aged 42, when Kate was just eight years old. She left behind three daughters, all of whom would go on to develop breast cancer – and survive.
“The clear difference between me and my mum was that I was able to stop cancer in its tracks,” Kate says. Now, Kate’s determined to spread awareness so that all Australians can do the same.

Incidence of breast cancer is on the rise, meaning more Australians will be affected in the prime of their working lives.
It’s one of the many reasons why NBCF is funding research projects like that of A/Prof Georgia Halkett who plans to implement a new individually-tailored program to support people affected by breast cancer who are looking to sustain or return to work following treatment. In 2002, NBCF began its long-standing partnership with automaker Ford. Since then, Ford’s determined commitment has helped raise $1.7 million for game-changing breast cancer research. It’s progress to be proud of. A huge thank you to everyone at Ford Cars for making it possible and contributing to our #25YearsOfImpact.

Sarajoy was fit, active, ate well, never smoked or drank and looked after herself. And yet despite a very healthy lifestyle, she was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was just 32 years old. It happened six days before Christmas. It’s a story that’s all too common.

In 2000, after 3 years of involvement, Sarah Murdoch officially became NBCF’s patron. For more than 18 years, she became instrumental in raising the organisation’s profile. During her tenure, fundraising increased from under $1 million per year to more than $27 million in 2014. We remain grateful for her lasting contribution and legacy.

Ben’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2016 when their son was just one year old. It was a challenging time but now, Ben’s wife is cancer free. The experience made him aware of how prevalent breast cancer is, and how many families are affected.

There is currently no effective targeted treatment for triple negative breast cancer. NBCF-funded researcher Dr Clare Stirzaker’s innovative research aims to develop a non-invasive liquid biopsy to identify epigentic biomarkers that could change the game. These can be used to inform patients about their disease and improve outcomes by offering a more personalised treatment strategy. NBCF-funded researcher Dr Philip Gregory is exploring the exciting new world of ‘microRNAs’. These tiny particles of genetic material exist inside cells and regulate how our genes are switched on and off. Dr Gregory is specifically interested in how these particles can cause breast cancer cells to spread. The information he discovers could lead to the development of improved treatments and preventative measures for metastatic breast cancer.

I will no longer support the Breast Cancer foundation due to your appalling decision to partner with a formula company! The research clearly states that breastfeeding decreases a women's chance of developing breast cancer, yet you form a partnership with corrupt formula companies which are trying to brainwash women into giving up breastfeeding & giving them artificial crap! This is comparable to if McDonalds formed a partnership with the heart foundation.... totally goes against what you stand for. I feel the Breast Cancer Foundation no longer cares about preventing cancer & are now more interested in becoming a profitable organisation targeting vulnerable women. If women breastfeed & therefore don't develop cancer, then you won't make as much money. Totally corrupt just like the hospitals who try & brainwash mothers into thinking they can't breastfeed just so they can push formula on mums to get their payouts from disgusting formula companies. You are pathetic!
