PAIN WEEK: Meet Anika Haigh, a Research Assistant from the Pain Research Team at NeuRA.
Led by Associate Professor James McAuley, their work at NeuRA its focused on the prevention and the treatment of chronic low back pain.
New research shows that there are changes in the brain when someone has pain for a long time. These changes include changes to the size and function of the brain, that can make recovery slower and more difficult.
... Using this knowledge of the brain and how it changes with pain they have developed two new treatment programs for chronic low back pain. To find out more about the Resolve Clinical Trial, visit: http://neura.edu.au/resolve

Scientia Professor George Paxinos AO is famous for creating maps of the brain. He is one of NeuRA’s most esteemed researchers and the most cited neuroscientist in the world!
Now he is taking his world-renowned brain atlases to a new dimension: 3D.
“Just as maps guided explorers of the world centuries ago we need maps of the brain to help researchers and brain surgeons explore the brain,” says Professor Paxinos.

Meet Wei-Ju Chang, Wei has been practising musculoskeletal physiotherapy for 15 years in Australia. He is completing his PhD under the supervision of Dr Siobhan Schabrun and Associate Professor James McAuley at Western Sydney University and NeuRA.
His PhD looks at neuroplasticity (brain changes) in pain to answer the question - why do some people recover from acute low back pain, while others develop chronic back pain?
... Wei believes that a better understanding of these changes in the brain could lead to novel and more effective treatments that target neuroplasticity and ultimately better outcomes for people living with chronic pain.

Meet Lauren Poulos, Lauren is a Biripi woman from NSW. Lauren is a Project Coordinator for NeuRA working on the development of a website Caring for Spirit, which provides resources to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people learn about dementia and access support.
The Caring for Spirit website is important because dementia is at least three times more prevalent in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities than the general Australian population and these com...munities need readily available, culturally-relevant and evidence-based information.
“I’m passionate about my work because I’m Aboriginal and dementia is something that impacts our mob,” says Lauren. “It’s important to educate people about dementia so that they know where they can go and what they can do when they need information.”
‘Because of her, we can’ help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people access important information about dementia that helps them and their community to age well. #NAIDOCweek #BecauseOfHerWeCan
