STOP THE PRESSES! Russell McPhedran's Golden Age of Press

Stop the Presses" showcases his most famous images - the 1968 Buckhimgham's department store fire that won awards and made his career; coverage of the 1972 Munich terrorist attacks; the life and times of Princess Margaret, the forgotten Royal; and a host of sporting stars and entertainment celebrities.

This week marks a decade since the events in Afghanistan that led to Corporal Mark Donaldson being the first Australian soldier awarded the Victoria's Cross since the Vietnam War.
On 2 September 2008, Corporal Donaldson drew enemy fire to ensure injured comrades were brought to safety during a patrol in Uruzgan Province.
Jonothan Moore covers these events and those involving many more of our heroes in his new book, "A History of the Australian Military".

From stick insects and mantises to lacewings and caterpillars, many of the images have to be seen to be believed.

WEATHERBOARD & IRON - Barnaby Joyce
"Conservatism calls for an appropriate and balanced response to maintain the social contract of manners that is expected, to retain the harmony of the society we live in. Conservatism in a sentence, for me, is the preference for stability over desire. This applies to everything from dress sense to economics." - Barnaby Joyce from 'Weatherboard and Iron'.

WEATHERBOARD & IRON - Barnaby Joyce
"In 1997 I had joined the Queensland National Party in Charleville. Although I had a strong interest in politics, it was something I saw as a community service, essential if there was to be any hope in regional Australia for these people. Whingeing and bitching at the front bar in the corner pub about being forgotten about and misunderstood has never helped anybody, it’s just bravado that you never have to back up with action.
I had not drunk the Kool Aid on this; I was a cynic, but it seemed the best option, better at least than complaining and hand-wringing, which is all so many could offer. Worse, these types use their complaining and hand-wringing as a social cue, elevating themselves as victims who had somehow suffered and survived." - Barnaby Joyce, extract from "Weatherboard and Iron".

I bought 'A Killer in the Family' and was very excited for some insight that was not already on Wikipedia and all major news stories. I am so far - five biographies in - wrong. This is not what truly saddens me though, what truly saddens me is that this book is littered with spelling and grammatical errors. They're painfully obvious and I'm convinced that no one in your office bothered to even read the book you then published. Someone would surely have noticed blatant mistakes such as: "...was convinced to join in the murder. too One of the men...", "...just captured American's most wanted serial killer" and "...but Eleanor also though another man was a possible candidate". While I recognize "though" and "American's" to be in the dictionary and thus not give you that handy little red squiggly line in Microsoft Word, I expect slightly more of... You know... Someone employed for the purpose of editing literature. I expect some awareness that "too" and "to" mean very different things, and an understanding of how full-stops are used. Basic stuff, really. Absolutely heartbreaking to see the death of literary pride extends beyond the Internet. Even more heartbreaking that I'm writing this negative review in the first place... I just wanted to enjoy a good read.
