“Prof Tim Roberts has just returned from leading a group of 20 University of Newcastle students to Indonesian Borneo to study the proboscis monkey. This amazing monkey lives along the waterways and has a diet of mangrove leaves and fruits, much like the koala is a specialised eater of eucalyptus leaves. In his pictorial travelogue he will give an insight into the conservation problems facing these unique animals in the face of the ever expanding conversion of virgin forest to palm oil plantations.

We know drones are all the rage to get that best photo, but they are also important for geoscience.
Drone in geoscience will be presented as part of National Science Week by Paul McBain (DPE) and Lewis Payne (Peabody Energy) will present talks on the game-changing application of drone technology in geoscience – and the quantum leap they bring to environmental monitoring, rehabilitation, geotechnical engineering and safety.

Disappointment couldn't even describe the feeling of visiting the Museum today We specifically went for the Dinosaur Exhibition and for the money we spent to get in, to then have my kids whip through in less then 2 minutes and say "mum is that it?" was so sad. There was no interactive experiences at all and really if your kids can't read it was quite boring.

The only good thing I could say was the lady at the door, just as we were leaving, was so lovely when my boys asked some question about exactly how and why the Dinosaurs were extinct.

Then we go over to the supernova part, once again disappointed. Most of the scientific things weren't working.

Then over to the BHP exhibition we go and almost everything in this area that was interactive was broken and not working also :(

My boys were so over everything not working that they just asked me "could we go home."

I remember going to the old Museum and it was AWESOME !!! The supernova part upstarts was so great for the kids and so much fun.

I do understand that the Museum is run by volunteers and these things take time and money to fix, but to have a 50% or more ratio of things not working is such a disheartening and disappointed in such a fantastic historic forum to pass down to the younger generations about our town.

I have now been on a few occasions over the years as I have given it time for these things to be rectified but to come back time and time again and the same things are still not working, I will not be returning (and as stated this disappoints me greatly to make this decision)

Thoroughly enjoyed this visit with the grandchildren. Free admittance, lots of interactive science displays, pictorial history of Newcastle, Coal Mining display and BHP display including an hourly 10 minute multi-media light and sound show of molten steel being poured from a furnace into a large ladle, had the kids mesmerised. Normally not opened on Mondays except during school holidays.
