About Nicholson Museum

The Nicholson Museum is home to Australia's largest antiquities collection, displaying artefacts from ancient Egypt, Greece, Italy, Cyprus & Near Eastern.

Nicholson Museum Description

The Nicholson Museum was founded in 1860 by Sir Charles Nicholson, one of the founders of the University. The donation of his personal collection of antiquities to the University formed the basis of a collection that has since expanded to become the largest of its kind in Australia, with material from ancient Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Egypt, the Near and Middle East, and Europe. The Nicholson Museum was formerly managed under the auspices of the Department of Classics and the Department of Archaeology, and maintains close links with departmental research and fieldwork. The Museum has a dedicated exhibition space in the University's Quadrangle.
