Nida Description

NIDA is Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art, a centre of excellence in training for theatre, film and television.

NIDA selects and trains talented young people in a range of disciplines, including acting, directing, writing for performance, design, music theatre, production, costume, properties and staging. Students gain an unrivalled educational foundation in their chosen fields.

After opening our doors in 1959, NIDA has grown to become one of the world’s leading dramatic and performing arts institutes. Graduates have gone on to work in the arts and entertainment industry throughout Australia and the world.

The NIDA training philosophy, educational expertise and facilities are available to the public through NIDA Open short courses and Corporate Performance business training courses.

Our third year BFA (Costume) students presented a stunning showcase of their Major Research Projects yesterday which included the impact of technology on floral textile design, transformative costumes onstage, the social history of the shepherdess hat, Russian royal attire and how magnets embedded in fabric can create movement.

We are excited to embrace the world of musical theatre with the launch of a partnership for the development of 'Starstruck', the 1980s film directed by Gillian Armstrong, into a stage musical. ‘What an opportunity for us – we only have to look around this room to see the amazing entrepreneurial spirit that NIDA has been famous for and the potential for an astonishing future in musical theatre,’ said NIDA Director/CEO Kate Cherry at the launch event.

Can you believe these costumes are made entirely out of paper?! These creepy characters were brought to life with the help of our talented VET Specialist Make-up students.

Our third year Props students presented their Masterworks yesterday including wearable props, mimicking water for stop-motion animation, swords with special effects, wooden sculptures, brushes for performance art, painting replica marble finishings and collapsible props.
