Words of wisdom from parents who've been there.
What do you wish you'd known about decay in kids before you experienced it? We love to hear your insights.

1 in 3 children suffer from this chronic disease by the age of 6...a disease so severe that up to 30,000 children are hospitalised every year. Let's work together to create a better future for our kids, where every child has the opportunity to be pain-free and healthy.

Sadly, a very similar situation here for Australia's Paediatric dentists. First check-up by age one: absolutely critical.

Apologies to all our patients for today's disruption caused by the fire at the Parklea exchange. Our phone and internet are currently down, hopefully we'll be back online soon. In the meantime, we are still contactable by email at referrals@nwpd.com.au
Thank you for your patience.

***Parent question***
'What age should I take my child to the dentist?'
Answer: 12 months
... As a parent, you might think that's ridiculous - my child has hardly any teeth, they're too little, they won't sit in the chair, they'll be scared, all the teeth look fine, my dentist told me don't bother till they're at school.
Well here are some stats for you:
**1 in 3 kids will have a trauma to the primary teeth.
The very worst time for us to be meeting your child for the first time is after an accident when they are in pain.
**40% of children will have dental decay by the age of 5 years. Decay crosses all socio-economic groups and is largely preventable. We see the best outcomes for our patients when they see us from 12 months, and this is vastly different to the 5 year old who turns up seeing us for the first time with a toothache.
Besides all the sciencey stuff, we're fun, the kids love us (even if we do say so ourselves 😊) check-ups are easy and the kids don't need to get in the chair. 👍
So if your child hasn't had a first check-up yet, take action and call to book on 8814 7945.

Our favourite film about the effects of sugar in body is showing for the first time on SBS. Sunday April 2nd at 8.30pm. Watch it with your kids, share with your friends. It's a winner.

**** Dental Confessionals***
When my little guy got his first teeth, I thought great, now I can do a video of how to brush a toddler's teeth and use it as part of our educational material.
I envisaged him sitting serenely with his mouth open for the full 2 minutes with confetti falling from the sky and me patting myself on the back for a job well done.
... Well the universe had other ideas by sending me a fiesty, gorgeous, cuddly, determined little devil reincarnate, and a big fat lesson. Turns out brushing is pretty easy when you've got a dental chair, an assistant and 2 free hands. Who would have thought. I suspected I could see something in the eyes of our parents whilst I was pregnant 'Haha' they said...'just wait...your time is coming...'
Toothbrushing degenerated pretty quickly at my house to next-level 15 month old meltdowns. So I 'stooped' to using the Wiggles Toothbrushing App. The irony of using a screen as my new dental assistant wasn't lost on me. But it's great, and it prevented the toothbrush inadvertently ending up my son's nose whilst I trapped him in a wrestling leg hold for the required 2 minutes.
So instead of posting a video of this hideousness, here's a picture of how much toothpaste to put on the brush. And remember to 'spit, don't rinse' so you don't wash away all that lovely fluoride. And don't tell Pete Evans.
