Nsw Ses Hornsby Unit

The NSW SES (New South Wales State Emergency Service) Hornsby Unit is the local combat agency for floods, storms and tsunami.

Hornsby Unit of the NSW State Emergency Service is a volunteer organisation of approximately 100 members, all of whom volunteer their time to help their community in emergencies. Since 1958, the Hornsby Unit has been proudly serving the Hornsby Shire community to prepare for and respond to storms and floods. Every year in Australia, storms cause more damage than any other natural disaster.

Across the state there are 10, 000 volunteer members in over 230 Units, who are easily identified by their distinctive orange overalls. While our core responsibilities are for flood, storm and tsunami operations, the NSW SES also provides support to general rescue efforts in the State. This includes Road Crash Rescue (RCR), Vertical Rescue (VR), Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), evidence searches, and other forms of specialist rescue. Volunteers in a number of isolated communities have also been trained as Community First Responders by the Ambulance Service of NSW. The NSW SES also assists other emergency services with major operations, including the NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW, the NSW Rural Fire Service, and the Ambulance Service of NSW.

The NSW SES also partners with local communities through Community Capability activities with the aim of engaging at-risk communities on preparedness, response, and recovery measures to improve the resilience to storms, floods, and tsunami.
