The 2018 NSW Training Awards, Women in non-Traditional Trades or Vocation Award goes to Tayla Constable. Working in the physically demanding, male-dominated rural contracting industry in Central West NSW, Tayla has drawn strength, conviction and inspiration from her agricultural studies at TAFE NSW. She has also used her studies to help build a successful rural contracting business.
Having completed Certificates III and IV and a Diploma in Agriculture, Tayla is now working towards an Advanced Diploma of Agribusiness Management. She believes VET plays an integral role in the future of the industry.

The collaboration “Working together ‘Caring for the Coast’ between TAFE NSW and Central Coast Local Health District makes them the worthy winners of this year’s Industry Collaboration Award at the 2018 NSW Training Awards. When the Central Coast Local Health District wanted to offer a school-based trainee program to create priority employment opportunities for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, it chose TAFE NSW as its partner. Belinda Maudson is the 2018 VET Trainer/Teacher winner at the 2018 NSW Training Awards. Belinda’s dedication, initiative and creativity as a teacher shines through in everything she does.
For 13 years, Belinda has nurtured students undertaking Illustration and Production Design qualifications at TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore, leveraging her professional relationships within the film, television, theatre and events industry – and her ‘never say no’ attitude – to deliver the skills, support and opportunities students need to achieve and succeed. Keiran Sullivan, the worthy winner of the 2018 VET in Schools Student of the Year at the 2018 NSW Training Awards. In 2017 Kieran won the Arthur Heath Memorial Scholarship for outstanding results in agriculture and scored an Industry placement scholarship with a veterinary research company. Kieran says what has impacted him most from his study is the necessity for sustainability in agriculture, and to understand the effects of chemical use on the environment.

Tarnisha Winsor, the 2018 NSW Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student of the Year, credits her opportunities, accolades and growing confidence to her school-based traineeship with the Upper Hunter Shire Council. She has also recently won the Peter Hilder Memorial Award for an Indigenous VET student, and Upper Hunter Shire Young Citizen of the Year 2018.

Determined to develop her confidence and creativity, Michelle Brown was quick to make a positive impression on her teachers and fellow students. This was only heightened when she experienced a worsening of her Multiple Sclerosis and became confined to a wheelchair. True to her nature, Michelle used these events as a source of inspiration and developed a body of work that saw her earn attention and acclaim in the creative sector. Today she’s proud to call herself an ‘emerging artist’. A worthy winner for the Phil Darby Memorial Encouragement Award for an Apprentice or Trainee.

Katayoon Karimodini, also known as Kathy, is the 2018 NSW Vocational Student of the Year winner. She finished her Diploma in Community Services through TAFE NSW with outstanding results. The qualification helped the Iranian immigrant transition from work in the ICT industry to a multicultural social support coordinator.
