We have a small number of meat chickens (15) ready to kill next week. Any takers at $9.00 each.
We have plenty of local honey available now and will be selling some of our bee hives in the coming weeks. Following the recent press about adulterated honey, either of these options might appeal.
A few meat chicks left over today ($4.75 each) and some now at two weeks, growing fast ($6.75 each).
We have quite a few meat chicks left over this week - about 40. Good time of year to grow big tasty birds before the heat sets in.
After the rain stopped yesterday morning (we received a much needed 23mm) we had a rush on our older pullets. We are now sold down to birds of age 6 weeks or younger. However, more birds are arriving from the growing farm on Friday and these will include brown, black, and white point of lay pullets.
A sad time at the hatchery earlier in the week when we lost our Maremma Max. He was over eleven years old and old age had slowed him down the last few months. His early work in minding our free range ducks, and later our free range chickens was a great joy to him. Now resting in peace on the farm he loved with his sister Molly. Greatly missed by all the staff.
Australia is not the only country in drought. This week Switzerland dropped all tariffs on imported feed because of the drought there. Canadian farmers are now lobbying the government to delay agricultural taxes because of the drought. Then Germany announced that grazing in conservation areas would be allowed because of drought conditions.
The worst drought ever that is now affecting our farmers in NSW and QLD is unfortunately far from over as there is no relief in sight according to weather forcasters.
This drought will eventually affect everyone. Hay is becoming unprocurable and grain prices are skyrocketing because of short supplies and the likelihood of a failed/reduced harvest this year. Basic food items will increase in price, probably significantly.
Here at the hatchery, we are already having to make har...d decisions. We have cut our small beef herd by 30% because of a shortage of feed. Poultry feed prices have risen by 20% since January, most of that increase last week, and more increases are coming. We have taken the decision to reduce free range egg production and the growing of young pullets. We also need to urgently increase our prices to cover these increases in cost, so expect a price rise on all our products from 1 September.
If feed prices continue to increase (as we expect) and we cannot cover these extra costs then we may not survive.

Our brown layers are now on the verge of laying their first eggs ($27.20 each). Our young chicks, both brown and black, are growing nicely at two weeks ($11.00 each). All our layers are sexed and fully vaccinated. Plenty of frozen reptile food and honey also available. Come on out.
Our next flock of 200 free range layers is now coming into full production. The early eggs are small and are available for $5.50 per tray (45g eggs) and $6.50 per tray (50g eggs). Trays contain 30 eggs.
Another batch of point of lay pullets is ready now - 250 beautiful brown birds. Next Wednesday day old chicks will be available - both brown and black.
No layer chicks but 5 meat chicks left over this week. $4.75 each, collect before Saturday.
We have some day old chicks left over from yesterday's hatch - 20 brown layer chicks ($9.20 each) and 2 meat chicks ( $4.75 each).
Due to late hatching this week, our day old chicks will not be available until Thursday morning. Bond Brown and Bond Black available.
It has been very quiet at the hatchery lately so just reminding everyone that we have a full age range of chickens available (7 -17 weeks) with more day olds hatching next week. Day old meat chicks available to order. Also fully stocked with reptile food and honey with some bee hives still for sale.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to family commitments we will be closed on Saturday 7th April. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Our bees have worked hard this year and we have plenty of honey in packs of 500g, 1Kg, 3Kg, and 6Kg. We are also selling some of our bees - $310.00 per hive. Includes bottom board, F/D brood box, excluder, two ideal supers and migratory lid. All ten frame. Full working colony.
