Facebook Live #79

User

Just a reminder that Facebook Live is on today at 2:30pm AEDT where Karen answers a total of baby/toddler sleep questions from her followers.
Today's 7 questions are:
1. 22 month old with frequent night waking. He is booked in for a sleep study, on melatonin, and every night at 3 - 4am wakes up and cries until mum goes and soothes him.
... 2. 8 month old twins in swaddle transition and now won't sleep.
3. 6 month baby falling asleep on the breast, how does mum keep him awake to teach self-soothing?
4. 8.5 month old standing up in the cot at bedtime and won't sit down.
5. 5.5 month old, wakes a lot after being put down at 7pm.
6. When a baby has their sleep affected by a developmental leap, do they go back to sleeping normally once the leap is over or do you have to sleep train them all over again?‬
7. 2.5 year old and night waking and banging his head against the cot.
You may have seen we now have a new process: Karen will answer a total of 7 questions only, picked at random from the list. Questions need to be submitted via the invitation post on the Sunday or Monday (the two days prior) to the session.
Unfortunately Karen will not be able to consider any questions that are not written in the comments under the invitation post.
Thanks!

Motherhood brings out all kinds of opinions and advice, most often unsolicited. When you are so freaking tired that coffee is the only thing keeping you vertical, you can’t quite remember the last time you showered and you think that stain on your pants MIGHT be chocolate, but you couldn’t say 100%, well, you aren’t necessarily your most confident self

Carolina wanted another baby and she had to undergo treatment for IVF. To increase her success rate she needed to wean Bella. Bella was given six months of breastmilk which I think is really commendable. But when time is of the essence and you're over 40, your chance of IVF and pregnancy success is increased if your hormone levels are good. Unfortunately for some mums that means giving up breast feeding. Here is mum's story in her own words ...

This baby is incredible!

This is an easy to prepare puree for a baby over 4 months of age from Louise Fulton-Keats. Chia seeds are high in tryptophan and promote sleep. It’s also a no sugar dessert, dairy-free and vegan so ticks lots of boxes. Perfect for mango season when this fruit is in overabundance in Australia. And I’m sure your little baby is going to LOVE it! Read on for the recipe:

WE NEED TO DISCUSS WAYS TO IMPROVE SLEEP DEPRIVATION IN NEW MUMS — LIKE MANDATORY PAID FAMILY LEAVE AND IMPROVED MATERNITY LEAVE POLICIES, AFFORDABLE CHILD CARE AND BETTER POSTPARTUM HEALTH CARE — AND CARE ABOUT PARENTS LONG AFTER THEIR CHILDREN ARE PUSHED INTO THE WORLD...

Dear Diary, Mum keeps telling me that I should be sleeping in my own bed. As you can see, Mum is an idiot, and I've moved in my Chelsea pillow and stretched myself out to fill up as much of her bed as possible just to really prove the point. She told me the other day that she was "sure you will want to sleep in your own bed soon". No, Mum. You are wrong. Love from Beth xxx

I do the occasional toddler seminar and as always interesting issues are raised about toddler behaviour. At one seminar Tracy told us about her lovely daughter Millie, aged 2 and three quarters. She has red hair and is quite a curious and spirited child who knows how to push the buttons! Got the picture? Tracy described a situation where Millie will frequently undo her child seat safety straps, just as they are cruising along on the motorway at a leisurely 110km/h! Imagine?! So what do you do? We had a think and discussion and I felt the way forward was a star chart. Star charts can be overused and then create apathy but used correctly they are a piece of pure gold. Click to read the dos and don'ts of a sticker chart, and links to printables on my blog.

A friend recommended I call Karen about my 5 month old after we had tried (what I thought) was "everything" - including going to Dalwood for two day stays... with no progress. I was such a skeptic when I first spoke to Karen, but with a few days of persistence using her practical advice, we won the sleep battle. 95% of the time now, we have a happy bubba who sleeps well in the day and sleeps through each night. Karen is saved in my phone as the "sleep fairy" - she is truly amazing. Thank you!
