Operation Straw

About Operation Straw

Every piece of plastic created still exists somewhere, and more than eight million tons of the stuff makes its way to the ocean every year. Plastic pollution is an overwhelming issue, and it can be hard to know where to begin when it comes to taking action. Which is why we want you to start small and tackle just one item; plastic straws. Operation Straw was originally designed to be 3-month campaign to tackle the prolific amount of plastic found in Manly Cove. In just 12 weeks, volunteers collected more than 2, 000 plastic straws from the area and the findings from the initial campaign helped to inspire more than forty businesses in the local area to say 'see-ya' to single-use plastic straws, however, we didn't anticipate the community that would form around strawkling. Since Summer of 2017 /18 we have hosted over 50 events with over 600 participants and removed over 4, 800 straws from Manly Cove along with other marine debris. We believe in thinking global and acting local so we continue to foster a community through regular fun events and empower people to get out there and chat to their favourite bars and cafes about switching from straws and other plastics.
