Orana Mid-Western Police District Description

The Orana Local Area Command is located in the Central Western area of New South Wales and forms part of the Western Region. The Command takes in, and shares the boundaries of five Local Government Councils. These Councils being the Dubbo City Council, Wellington Shire Council, Gilgandra Shire Council, Narromine Shire Council and the Cabonne Shire.

The total area policed by the Orana LAC is 17, 439 square kilometres. The 2006 Census indicates the population of the Orana LAC is in excess of 53, 469. Based on the Census data, approximately 6, 600 are of Aboriginal or Torres Straight Island descent.

The Orana LAC is intersected by two major Highways - the Newell Highway and Mitchell Highway. The Newell HIghway is the major inland road link from Brisbane and Melboure and continually carries a high volume of heavy vehicle transport and tourist related traffic. The Mitchell Highway is the major route for road freight and tourist traffic to Western NSW.
