I really love it when children come and try our cheese at markets. It's such a gift to give them an appreciation of wholesome food early on. Setting up good habits for later in life. It was midnight when I woke......noises and an empty space beside me, made me get up quickly. Entering the kitchen and recovering rapidly from the rush of delight naturally felt when a woman sees a bloke with a mop in his hand, I enquired of my husband, why he had chosen midnight to begin mopping the kitchen floor. This is Moo, she is 13 and this morning, lambed triplets......all ewes......I am beyond excited! I have been hanging out for her to lamb as she is so special. This girl was the first ewe we raised and has been a constant in our lives for the last 13 years. A cancer survivor (hence her lack of an ear....), she is the most gentle natured and generous hearted of animals. When they were small, the boys used to ride her. "Mutton busting" they said .....as she promenaded them slowl...y and carefully around the paddock. We use her to bring flighty young ewes calmly into the yards and her dignified presence in the dairy keeps all the adolescent girls in line. I know when she's walking behind me as her footfalls are as distinct to me, as those of my children. Her downfall is food......she has had grain poisoning twice and has had a near death experience with rat bait, which she mistook pellets. She knows her mind, is terribly headstrong and is the only one @kevin.pecora will not take on. Her last lamb was two years, a single ram, and it almost broke her. She came to the house to find me to help her. There was wet ground this morning......we didn't get much rain overnight, but it was enough to know that the ewes were wet as they pushed past me to get into the dairy for morning milking. Wet jeans makes for a cold morning milking......made worse by the fact that I failed to get out of the way fast enough of the milking machine rinse water......sigh.....however, my day improved a lot with the arrival of these gorgeous twins. You can only see one dear little face here but t...hey are the sweetest poppets. Most of the lambs are ready for weaning, so it's special to have these last few little babes to ohhh and ahhh over!! The girls are getting a bit bolshy with the state of the pasture......or rather lack there of.....they have limited respect for fences (and management) as it is, but late winter and this dry has seen them ruling the joint! Gates and fences are a mere hinderance.....further more they are taking their bebes and teaching them wicked tricks! Sigh.....and on lambs, look at these beautiful twins! They are almost ready to be weaned. Exciting times.

I have two girls in my hospital at the moment......the hospital is in one of our sheds, it's warm, dry and full of hay. The first ewe is Moo, a beautiful old friend who is due to lamb any day and just needs a bit of special attention. The other, is a ewe I found cast on a dam wall. It happens sometimes when they are heavily pregnant, if a ewe lies down with her legs on an incline, she can't get up. So, last night, I headed out to tend to my patients for the final time that e...vening, when who should appear, having played truant from milking, but our girl Kevin! She was dead set determination to spend the night in the hospital. So cross was she when I shut her out of the shed that she growled at me.......honestly, I got such a fright, there in the dark, with a bizare growling noise outside! Australia's first non-cooked raw milk cheese. A very happy milestone.

Cheese is the preservation of time and place........Yarrawa is stamped with the season the cheese was made and the pasture the ewes were eating at the time of milking and that raw milk then made into cheese. We use the smallest amount of culture, just enough to start the acidification process. The taste of the cheese is the result of the incredibly diverse indigenous microflora which is found naturally in our raw milk. During the ripening process the flavours of the cheese develop in complexity and intensity. This little poppet has a lot of eating to do to get through this load!.......I generally try not to talk too much about the lack of rain, but it is really so dry. We are feeding out load after load of hay and the prices are through the roof. One of the reasons we decided to farm in Robertson is because it receives Australia's second highest rainfall. So when it's dry in Robbo, you know things are a bit desperate. Eekk, we have had SO many babies born in the last three days.....there are lambs everywhere! #lambspam alert dear friends, we are not done yet....today, I brought twins in and will raise them as bottle lambs. I really don't make this decision lightly and try all the tricks in my book to have mum raise her lambs. I didn't succeed today though and made the call to bring them in tonight. It's a bit like pop corn........we start with two or three ewes lambing sporadically, then a few more and then suddenly we are inundated and there are babies everywhere! We are still at the initial pop corn stage...... we've been lucky with these clear, sunny days though, there is nothing more lovely than seeing little white lambs dotted around the paddock fast asleep in the sun.
