The Academy was founded by Peter Morton B. E. M. in Queanbeyan 1962, and is considered one of the oldest martial arts clubs in the Canberra region.

The Academy teaches a practical, non-competitive martial art to people of all ages with an emphasis on Self Defence.

The techniques taught use an attacker's strength to a defender's advantage. These defensive strategies aim to initially evade, disable and finally immobilise an attacker.

The syllabus includes the teachings of Jishukan Ryu 自修館流 (Jujitsu-Kempo founded by Shuho Sugita 1947); Judo 柔道 (founded by Jigoro Kano 1882), Boxing and aspects of modern Jujitsu.

Classes are conducted in a semi-formal environment. The aim is for students to enjoy themselves while improving personal skills such as coordination, reflexes, physical fitness, self control and self esteem.
