About Playgroup Nsw

Playgroup is a lightly structured, informal gathering where parents, other carers, babies and children up to school age come together to connect and play.

Playgroup Nsw Description

Playgroup NSW connects people to strengthen child, family and community wellbeing through playing, learning and building communities of support.

We are a membership association that supports children and their families to come together for playgroups and other activities that promote early childhood development and build connections between families and in communities.

In 2014 /2015 we had more than 12, 000 active family members, with over 20, 000 children attending playgroups. This makes Playgroup NSW one of the state's largest civil society organisations.

Playgroup NSW is supported by State and Federal government funding, membership fees, one-off grants and corporate partnerships.

Community Playgroups

Community Playgroups are run by local parents on a voluntary basis. They comprise the majority of playgroups affiliated with Playgroup NSW. These groups cater to a range of children from babies to school age.

In addition to hundreds of these general playgroups that meet across NSW each week, there are many groups that satisfy more specific needs of parents and children ranging from baby playgroups, to bilingual playgroups, intergenerational, dads groups and more.

Playgroup NSW also offers facilitated playgroups and peer support groups for families with particular needs. For example:

Supported Playgroups are facilitated groups that bring together families who may otherwise not access playgroups or who require other supports.

PlayConnect Playgroups are facilitated peer support groups specifically for children aged 0-6 years with autism or similar behaviours.

MyTime Peer Support Groups are for anyone caring for a child up to the age 16 with a disability or chronic medical condition. MyTime gives parents the chance to socialise and share ideas with others who understand the rewards and intensity of their caring role.

Our Reach:

- Over 800 playgroups covering 70% NSW postcodes
- Approximately 60 of these are facilitated groups for families with particular needs
- Almost 1, 000 playgroup sessions held each week
- An estimated 20, 000 children a year attenting playgroups affiliated with us
- 1, 000 + parent and career member volunteers run our community playgroups
- Over 7, 000 children, parents and carers attend our free community events during National Playgroup Week and throughout the year.

My 2 year old son attended a play group yesterday where another child's food was left unattended & accessible to all. Being 2, my son ate it before I even realised it was there and that it was a peanut butter sandwich. I followed our action plan however 2 hours later we were in the back of an ambulance, 4 hours in hospital.

I just spoke to your office where I received an incredibly unsatisfactory and quite indifferent response. I thought it my responsibility to notify of the incident and right to ask about nut free policies considering allergy awareness is actually listed as one of the benefits on your website.

I was interrupted constantly and told that nut free environments are 'impossible' and 'too hard to control' as playgroups are mums and volunteers. I was also told I needed to approach every parent & tell them my son had allergies. What if these were unknown as ours were until recently?

I am well aware that my son's welfare and his supervision is my responsibility. I see it as part of my advocacy for him, my role as a parent and my responsibility as an early education professional to write this post. The majority of schools, play centres, party places and child care centres manage & control nut free environments so surely groups of mum's & volunteers can do it too. In these times where allergies are on the increase, often undetected until it's too late this should change. At the very least inform families that you do not have nut free/allergy policies and what actions need to be taken by the families of children with allergies.
