About Pocket City Farms

Pocket City Farms is a Community and Education charity in the heart of Sydney. We're for better food, better communities and a better planet for our children. Alongside, growing local, fair food for everyone in our society, we're passionate about engaging the hearts and minds of communities, schools and businesses across Australia to protect and enhance the lands we call home. We do this by educating Australians to think more sustainability and build their resilience to climate change, sharing our knowledge of regenerative practices, permaculture, waste reduction, heat mitigation and water saving techniques.

Pocket City Farms Description

Pocket City Farms is taking to Sydney's neglected spaces in an effort to make good of it - by producing organically-grown fresh produce!

The project takes unused spaces within Sydney metro and turns it into productive, arable farmland that generates fresh local produce harvested on market day with virtually zero 'food miles'.

Our first farm at Camperdown Commons in Sydney's inner west was opened in June 2016.

This is a new farming model in Australia that introduces ways to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the agricultural process. It virtually eliminates the need for transportation, while using organic, permaculture farming methods to save water and energy in the meantime.

Importantly, the farm is an exciting community hub - a place to visit, dig your hands in the soil, and learn all about where exactly our food comes from and how it's grown!

Michael Zagoridis, farm manager + co-founder

Have your kraut-y bellies been well filled over this cabbagey season? We're keen to hone our fermenting skills later this month with Holly Davis's "Fundamentals of Fermentation" Q&A class coming up on August 25th. To get those fermented thoughts bubbling away, here's a short recipe from Holly's wonderful book "Ferment: A guide to the ancient art of culturing foods": . **Potent Probiotic Parsley Dressing** -2 Tbls Eden yellow mustard -1 Tbls white wine, apple cider or sherry v...inegar -2 tsp kraut juice or overly sour kombucha -1 bunch chopped continental parsley or a mix with mint -1 clove garlic -1 teaspoon maple syrup -Extra virgin olive oil, enough to create a thick emulsion . Blend in order and when you get to the olive oil drizzle it in slowly to create a thick but pourable emulsion. . Pop onto our website to book in for Holly's workshop! . 📷 of a delish broad bean salad by Ben Dearnley

Tonight! Zag & Mad are sleeping on the street. We'll be out in the elements with as many warm things as we can muster while sleeping on nothing but a piece of cardboard. It's going to suck big time, but this is reality for many homeless people who do it EVERY night without a choice. . Please donate on the link in our bio, funds go directly to the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre who does amazing work providing housing and support to those sleeping rough in our community.

Last night's Farm Chats! It was a chilly evening but we were quite literally jittery from the ideas, ethics and affirmations around food education that were buzzing from these guys last night. Honestly we could do a whole day hearing and learning together on equipping the next generation around food and systems, working towards an "expansive education in interdependance" (Michelle). . Our panelists spoke about a variety of food and culture shaping programs, about seeing new b...ehaviours develop in their students, recreating ritual and culture around food, making the vegetable the 'hero' of the dish, navigating social media spaces with hope, co-learning with communities around growing food, moving away from addiction to sugar based diets, schools valuing those with expertise through employment of garden and kitchen specialists....and ah, so much! . Thank you to all our speakers for sharing your stories with us. And of course THANKYOU to our audience, you brought questions and all of your own expertise into the room. These sorts of nights remind us that we must regroup to not only share ideas and wins in our practice, but also to remember that we're doing good work towards a more holistic future, and what you do as parents, educators and eaters is so important, and is certainly taken note of by the young ones and teens that we interact with daily! Thank you for modelling the future. . Next month's Farm Chats on Sept 5th is on NATIVE FOODS - check it out on our events page and we'll share more soon. . We are putting together some audio highlights from the last few chats but until then check out the panelist's pages to follow along with their work! @costasworld @seedharvestspoon @elementalpermaculture @mareelowes @ozharvest & Fiona @sakgf @ Pocket City Farms

One in four children don’t know where their food comes from - that apples are grown on trees, or that butter comes from cow’s milk. Almost a third think that yoghurt grows on trees. Meanwhile, one in four children are above a healthy weight limit. 🌱 In the face of a weak food system, a dominant processed food culture and poor nutrition, educating kids about food is incredibly timely and important. It starts at home, continues at schools and needs to become more ingrained in o...ur community activities. 🌱 So we’re super pumped for next week’s Farm Chats event on Teaching Kids About Food - parents, teachers, educators… anyone… it’s set to be a great discussion for us all to get amongst. // Wed 1st August 6-8pm. 🌱 Guided by the one and only Costa Georgiadis @costasworld from @gardeningaustralia, the all-star panel includes Maree Lowes aka @dirtgirlworldofficial, Aaron Sorenson of @elemental_permaculture, Amelia Berner of @ozharvest, Michelle Carrick of @seedharvestspoon, Fiona Doherty of Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardens @sakgf.

We may farm in the city, but we still attract mischievous cockatoos and galahs. Birds are an important part of a healthy thriving ecosystem and it’s especially evident this time of year. But our poor baby fennel... 😭 @ Pocket City Farms

Our second succession of snow peas has taken a lot longer to set fruit than the first. Cooler weather has really slowed things down and yesterday morning we received our first frost...ever! There is an abundance of flowers right now though and some brave winter bees are out doing their thing.

We are doing it again! Zag & Madi are sleeping it rough to raise money for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. All the money raised goes towards helping the most vulnerable members of our society. NNC are helping bring about significant social change for people at risk of homeless and shining a spotlight on the increasing need for affordable housing.
Every little bit helps so please support this amazing cause. We have seen first hand how the NNC has positively impacted the lives of the people they have worked with. So please help them to continue their amazing work!
