Pollution Research Pty Ltd is an Australian consulting firm established by Dr Ian Irvine in 1986. It specialises in the environmental assessment of contaminated sediments, marine ecological risk assessment, and water pollution studies, particularly in the marine and coastal environments. Dr Irvine has a Ph. D. in marine science (University of Sydney, 1981 – assessment of contaminated sediments throughout Sydney Harbour) and more than 40 years post-doctoral experience in the assessment and management of environmental pollution, with particular expertise with contaminated sediments, their chemistry, toxicity and water quality effects in-situ as well as during dredging or removal and disposal. Dr Irvine has carried out more than 400 investigations and reviews throughout Australia and overseas, including more than 125 studies, reviews and assessments involving contaminated sediments and dredging-related issues. Dr Irvine has been the principal consultant to the Commonwealth Department of Environment for the development and implementation of all three editions of the Australian dredging and spoil disposal environmental assessment guidelines (1998, 2002 and 2009), the latest being the National Assessment Guidelines for Dredging 2009.
