Toddlers cry. That is a fact. Sometimes toddlers cry for what appears to be illogical reasons. This too, is a fact. While the ability to form critical analysis is not yet part of a 3 year olds repertoire, the distress they feel when they cry over "silly" things is real. What do we do?
... 1. Be steady and still. Think mountain. 2. Allow the toddler or small child space to do their thang (different story if they're causing themselves or others serious harm) 3. Swallow your pride. If someone judges you poorly because your toddler is having a toddler tantrum, the problem lies with them. 4. Activate humorous compassion (yes, we just made that up). Feel sorry for the poor thing, but do nothing to fix, stop, interrupt, correct, reason, lecture while they are tantruming. Try to see the funny side of the situation. Better yet, commit it to memory so you have a story to tell at their wedding reception speech. 5. Once they run out of steam, give them a big cuddle (if they like cuddles). Ideally have some skin to skin contact, to support their return to physiological baseline, and assist with reinforcing your bond (ie. I still love you anyway, you muppet)

DEAR PARENTS, PLEASE CUT ALL YOUR STRAWBERRIES IN HALF!

Today is RU OK? Day.
Here are 5 tips from our psychologists on what you can do or say if the answer is "no, I'm not OK."
1. Say "I'm sorry you're not ok. I care and I want to help." ... 2. Ask "Would it help to talk about it?" 3. Say "I'm a good listener. Tell me what's been happening" AND then zip it. Actually listen! 4. If the person has been struggling for a while, say "It sounds like you've done everything you can to help yourself. Do you think it's time to get a professional opinion?" 5. Offer to go to their GP with them for moral support.

So our Practice Assistants support the administration and clinical teams to ensure smooth daily operations. Occasionally they're provided with personal projects, or be given slightly more responsibility, such as processing bulk bill claims. BUT they are always working alongside at least one admin staff member.
This morning, our poor admin member, Julia, wasn't able to come in. Lyndsay the PA stepped up and received a crash course in greeting clients, processing payments, upd...ating appointment status and taking phone calls. Talk about being thrown into the deep end!
We're proud to inform you that she handled a very unexpected and atypical shift with a positive, can-do attitude!
Thank you Lyndsay for being such a team player!
PS: Here she is, extremely focussed on processing a bulk bill claim. So focussed she wasn't aware she was papped! 😁

"Most parents of gifted children won’t be surprised that research supports what they can see for themselves: gifted children are highly sensitive to their environment and react with heightened emotional and behavioral responses, more so than do children of average intelligence.1 In fact, in the world of giftedness, the term “overexcitabilities” frequently comes up. Based on work by Kazimierz Dabrowski, a Polish psychiatrist and psychologist, the term itself is something of a misnomer, implying that the brain is reacting more intensely to a specific stimulus. In actuality, the neurological reactions simply have more going on."

User

We haven't heard of this term until recently. Have you?

User

Development of the upper parts depends upon prior development of lower parts. In other words, the brain is meant to develop like a ladder, from the bottom-up.
When disstress responses are repeatedly activated over an extended period in an infant or toddler, sequential development of the brain is disturbed.
The ladder develops, but foundational steps are missing and many things that follow are out of kilter.

User

If you don't know what to say, that's ok, just ask "how's he going?". You could even maybe consider complimenting the child, for example, "she has the most adorable smile."

Dear Clients and affiliates,
You may have heard about the latest Australian Psychological Society (APS) submission or you may have seen the articles below in circulation. If you have, you would be as concerned as we are, as this proposal significantly restricts the way you are able to access psychological services under Medicare including access to services provided by Lucy, Jessica, Rachele and I at Possibilities.

AFTER 2 YEARS WE HAVE FINALLY UPDATED OUR WEBSITE!
Thank you to everyone for your support and patience. It gives us great pleasure to introduce to you our team!
PS: For those who are wondering where the OTs and Speechies are, please know that we are still looking to add to our team. The problem is that our previous ones had set the bar so high, they're making all the applicants pale in comparison. If you had worked with our previous, you'd know what we mean :)
