Belgrove Distillery is, in plain language, so damn amazing.
One of the worldŌĆÖs only paddock-to-bottle distilleries, Belgrove is a vision realised by generational grain farmer Peter Bignell. Pete grows his organic grains on his farm about forty minutes north of Hobart. His still is hand-made from recycled materials, water is harvested from his roof, spent grain is fed to his sheep and bio-diesel to power the farm equipment and distilling is home-made from spent oil from the lo...cal roadhouse.
The resulting spirits, particularly whisky, could be celebrated for their experimental and sustainability credentials alone, yet what Pete produces is not only unique, but utterly world class. Outstanding rye whisky, peated whisky and oat whisky, amongst myriad ŌĆśfruitŌĆÖ distillates (Pommeau, Ginger Hammer, coffee liqueur et al) and spirits. The closed-loop distillery is home to various barrels and trials, and Pete is known for high quality as well as a sense of adventureŌĆ”who can forget PeteŌĆÖs vision splendid (alongside local Poor TomŌĆÖs distillery) in distilling the wine spit buckets rescued from the lauded Rootstock Sydney food and wine festival?
We are so lucky to have Pete coming to P&V for an exclusive look at his current range of delights. HeŌĆÖll be waxing lyrical on the everything from growing the grains, through to the distilling process, with all the colour in between. PeteŌĆÖs also an internationally-recognised master sand sculptor (no joke), which takes us down another amazing wormhole.
But thereŌĆÖs moreŌĆ” weŌĆÖve enlisted our good friends at Bloodwood Newtown to be in charge of eats ŌĆō thatŌĆÖs right, co-owner and chef Claire Van Vuuren and sommelier Amanda Cleal are going to be holding down the snacks and good times alongside Pete.
The tasting and light bites will soar through some eight (8) distillates with rounds of matching snacks, and tickets are just a mere $47 to join us. This will be another ŌĆśnot to missŌĆÖ event, and a rare sighting of the elusive and wonderful Pete Bignell.
