Riverina Highlands District is made up of 1 Local Government Area, Snowy Valleys Council (formally Tumut and Tumbarumba. The District is administered in Tumut, at the Fire Control Centre located in the Riverina Highlands Building, 76 Capper Street Tumut.

The District is made up of twenty eight brigades from Gocup in the north to Bringenbrong in the south near Khancoban and is made up entirely of volunteers who give up their time to train, maintain equipment and most importantly protect their communities from the ravages of fire.

Forests Corp and RFS Crews are responding to a reported fire in the Pine at Green Hills State Forest near Mt Hugel. No Cause for concern at this time.

Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS For people in Snowy Mountains and parts of South Coast, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Australian Capital Territory Forecast Districts. Issued at 10:27 am Friday, 2 November 2018.... VIGOROUS WINDS OVER OVER THE NSW/ACT SOUTHERN RANGES Weather Situation: Vigorous northwesterly winds are expected over the far southern ranges ahead of an approaching cold front, which will skim the far southeast of NSW early Saturday morning. Winds are expected to ease after the passage of the front. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible for parts of the southern ranges and tablelands. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 120 km/h are expected for Alpine areas above 1900 metres. Winds are expected to easing during Saturday morning. Locations which may be affected include Cooma, Bombala, Braidwood, Mount Ginini, Jindabyne, Perisher Valley, Charlotte Pass, Thredbo, Cabramurra, Selwyn, Bredbo, Adaminaby and Nimmitabel. Thredbo Top Station recorded a gust of 133km/h at 8:05am. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony. * Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences. * Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid on 131 388, or Endeavour Energy on 131 003 or Essential Energy on 132 080, as shown on your power bill. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

ACT RFS are dealing with a bushfire on our eastern boundary near Pierces Creek. It is not expected to impact Snowy Valleys Local Government area. Brindabella Road is still open however it is advisable to avoid the area at this time.

Total Fire Bans have been declared for tomorrow in the following areas for Friday 2nd of November 2018.

Southern Slopes Fire Area will remain at Very High , permits are suspended. Wind gusts are predicted to reach 60kph in our area. Postpone any activity likely to start a fire.

To all our Senior Volunteers, Forestry Corp NSW are holding forests familiarisation day this Saturday 3 November in the Tumut Plantations. This is suited to Deputies and Captains to gain a better understanding of fighting fires within the pine plantations. If you wish to attend please advice the Fire Control Centre before Thursday 1st November with brigade numbers planning to attend.

Fire Danger is escalating this week. We expect that by Wednesday Southern Slopes Fire Area will have a rating of Very High resulting in permits being suspended. We will know more as the week progresses. Please consider postponing activities likely to cause a fire until conditions ease next week.

High fire danger for Southern Slopes tomorrow Tuesday 23rd October which includes Snowy Valleys Council LGA. This is due to an increase in winds up to 40 kph associated with a front. Due around 4.00pm in Tumbarumba
Allthough permits are not suspended it is advisable not to conduct your permit burn until Wednesday. Please ensure your fire doesn't get away and damage property.

Congratulations to the 8 volunteers who completed the first component of Crew Leader Wildfire training today. All brigades need a succession plan and Crew Leader training is an essential part of that.
