Ryde Hospital was so lovely to me and looked after my mother so well when we arrived by ambulance yesterday. Thr nurses and doctors, the staff in emergency were so professional and caring it made the eleven hours yesterday until my mither was transferred to a ward so much easier for me to cope with my mother's illness yesterday. I don't believe they could have done anything any better. Thanks for your professionalism.

We were admitted to the hospital for an emergency operation on my wife; the 'medicare/public' experience was great and specially the nurses provided a great service. But the admin emergency staff members indirectly encouraged us to sign a form to be admitted as a 'private patient' . They should have been clearer about how much out of pocket we had to pay as a result of this.
Given our lack of previous experience, we ended up paying for private accommodation at a public hospital, yet the service we received (i.e food, bed in a share room of four) was 100% public experience.
Let me just say first that I was born at Ryde Hospital. Having said that, I wouldn't go there if my life depended on it (in fact, I tried giving it no stars but it wouldn't let me post). My elderly father spent some time there a few years ago. Drove himself there after having a fall at home and was told that he would just be staying over night. He was in there for seven weeks! Twice they got him confused with another patient. On his second day, he contracted a staph infection and no one noticed. The nurses just kept saying that he was in that condition when the ambulance brought him in and wouldn't believe us when we insisted that he had driven himself to the hospital (his car was in the car park). I went up one day and there was a bloody surgical glove in the middle of a corridor leading to the ward. I went back two days later and the glove was still there. Another time they rang us and told us to come straight to the hospital as his condition had deteriorated and they were moving him to the ICU. We rushed up (less than ten minutes) and found him sitting up in his ward eating lunch. When we queried this with the nurse she just said, "Ah, he got better." Don't bother calling them either. It's hopeless. You'll be put on hold or get someone who has no idea about what's going on. My sister called one time and asked, "Can I speak to Mr King in Ward 3, bed 27?" and the nurse snapped at her, "You'll have to be more specific. We've got two Mr Kings in the hospital at the moment." My sister responded with, "What? Your've got two Mr Kings in Ward 3, bed 27? I know you're short on beds but that's ridiculous." Another time he was moved to an 'infectious disease' room without anyone telling us. I went up, saw the sign on the door and put on the gown, hat, mask and gloves before entering to visit him. A nurse came in and asked me why I was wearing all the protective stuff. She said that he wasn't infectious and that they had just moved him in as they were short on space. The next day I walked straight in and sat down and you can probably guess what happened. A Nurse came in and started freaking out because I wasn't gowned up. No one could tell me whether or not he was infectious. They simply didn't know! Honestly, if you do ever have to be admitted to this place, make sure that you have someone acting as a patient advocate for you. And good luck - you'll need it!
The hospital is Ok and we didn't have to wait long. The nurses and the doctor were nice and helpful.
Significantly understaffed or extremely inefficient. Been waiting in emergency to see a doctor for over 2 hours. Was told there were 2 people in front of me, no one new has come in and all I need is an X-ray. Was told nurses can't order X-rays here even though at other hospitals nurses can. Never ever coming here again. Would prefer to drive hours to another hospital. Also, the chairs feel like you are sitting on concrete.
To the hardworking midwifes at Ryde Midwife clinic, I just want to thank you all for giving us the opportunity to have our son there. Such an amazing experience! Your dedication and love for the job is displayed in the care you've all provided us since we arrived at meet the midwifes night. I cannot more highly recommend this place for the birth of anyone's child.
