Meet the very adorable Hussy, an 11-year old Border Collie. Hussy was referred to SASH after collapsing at home and feeling lethargic. The team performed a CT scan which revealed a large right sided liver mass and was later found to be a hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). This is a cancer that with surgical resection, often gives a good prognosis and local recurrence is uncommon. Hussy’s parents Scott and Emily decided to proceed with surgery. Hussy had two lobes of he...r liver removed and during surgery, since the tumour was bleeding she required an emergency blood transfusion. The surgery went extremely well and Hussy made a full recovery. She is back home being her usual happy self with Scott and Emily!
The life-saving blood she had received was donated by Bandit, one of our public canine blood donors! Bandit is a handsome two-year-old German short haired pointer who was surrendered to the pound after not meeting the correct criteria as a show dog. He was quickly re-homed by his mom Karen and we are greatly appreciative of this as he is now one of our most loved donors. Bandit has a beautiful sister Winry who comes with him for company on the days he donates. The two of them are inseparable at home and when Bandit isn’t out saving other dog’s lives, he is people watching from his garden! :D
Do you think your dog could be a life-saving donor? Check out our website for more information!

GDV (commonly referred to as gastric torsion or “bloat”) is when the stomach becomes dilated then twists, left untreated is life threatening! Bloat is more susceptible to larger breeds with deep chest cavities such as Great Danes or Ridgebacks.
The very handsome Victory presented to our emergency department at SASH Central Coast in the earlier hours of the morning a few weeks ago after his owners noticed he had vomited and seemed quite distressed and bloated. An emergency surgery was performed by our wonderful surgery specialist, Dr. Stephen Fearnside in the wee hours of the morning to save Victory’s life. The team were so happy to have Victory back this week for a post operative check and as you can see in the video, he is back to his handsome cheeky self! ☺️

Meet Ralph, an extremely adorable 7-year old Cavoodle who has completed radiation therapy at our on-site Radiation Oncology facility at SASH Sydney!
Ralph was diagnosed with anal sac adenocarcinoma (anal sac cancer) and underwent multiple surgeries at his local vet in Melbourne, Advanced VetCare to try remove his cancer. Sadly, after all the attempts, Ralph’s cancer continued to return. The next step for Ralph was to receive radiation therapy and his dedicated owners made the... journey up to Sydney from Melbourne to visit our Radiation Oncology team.
Ralph had definitive treatment which was delivered stereotactically. Stereotactic treatments involve the delivery of high dose radiation in a smaller number of fractions (treatments) and are delivered every other day. Ralph’s owners decided to have him stay at SASH for the entire duration of his treatment and he soon became a very loved patient. During his stay, Ralph received endless cuddles from the team and enjoyed his afternoons playing with his favourite teddy the pig. Ralph even received a parcel of toys and treats from one of his Instagram followers during his time with us. What a superstar!
After 5 weeks of treatment, the time came for Ralph's family to finally take him back home to Melbourne and he was so excited to see them again. Ralph has been at home for over a month now and is recovering extremely well with his brother Harvey (pictured together) right by his side.
Radiation therapy should give Ralph a longer happier time to spend with his loving family as he still has lots of cuddles to give. Well done Ralph! 🧡🧡

One of our long-term patients, Mr. “Thor” underwent a pericardiectomy which involves surgical removal of part or most of the pericardium (membrane enclosing the heart). The procedure was performed by Dr Andrew Marchevsky one week ago today and we are pleased to see him doing so well at his recheck yesterday at our SASH Central Coast hospital!
We were also very touched by the lovely gift we received from Thor's beautiful family! ☺️🧡

Lenny is a very sweet 10-month old Dachshund who recently presented to our Emergency department. He was initially assessed at his local vet Kurrajong Veterinary Hospital after being found at home gasping for air!
His lovely owner Maddie brought Lenny to SASH for further investigations. On examination Lenny was very painful and had an increased respiratory rate and effort. A brief ultrasound and X-rays showed he had a diaphragmatic hernia (diaphragm rupture).
Lenny had emergen...cy surgery with the wonderful Dr Tristram Bennett https://sashvets.com/staff/dr-tristram-be nnett/ who stitched the diaphragm back together. During the surgery he was also found to have trauma to his right kidney, luckily for Lenny the damage was not severe enough for the kidney to be removed.
Lenny stayed initially in our ICU but once he was deemed stable enough he was discharged home to his loving mum (just in time for her birthday celebrations)! We are delighted to hear that Lenny is doing well at home and has made a full recovery. We wish you all the best cheeky Lenny! 🐶😊

Hamish is an adorable 4-year old male terrier cross who was referred to our incredible Internal Medicine service last month. Unfortunately, Hamish had a 6-month history of waxing and waning lethargy, and a low-grade fever. His lymph nodes were slightly swollen and he was losing weight (2kg = 20% of his body weight) and it was really unclear what was going on!
In cases like Hamish - we call this pyrexia of unknown origin - this can be a frustrating disease to work out what is ...going on and our team need to perform multiple tests, and re-evalulate over a period of time to try and get to the bottom of what is causing such symptoms.
Hamish was found to have a rare disease called type I immune mediated polyarthritis - IMPA. This is diagnosed by imaging including the joints, and joint taps (aspirating a tiny amount of fluid from the joints of the wrist, knees, and hocks). In a dog that is 5kg - that's a pretty tough task! The team also had to screen for possible triggers of this disease (including gut disease, and cancers).
Fortunately, the treatment for IMPA can be simple - with steroids. The medicine specialists use a special plan for the steroids to manage the disease, but also the side effects of the drugs which can be a tricky balance. Hamish has since returned for his 1 month recheck and the team was extremely pleased to see that he has found happiness again on steroids. He is charging around after his brother Andy - something he hasn't done for 6 months! Hamish's steroid dose will be reduced over the next 6 months and he will be carefully managed by our wonderful medicine specialist, Dr Amy Lam https://sashvets.com/staff/dr-amy-lam/
We are so delighted with his response and the joy he is bringing his Mum and Dad again. Well done Hamish! 🧡
