Rugged with unforgiving deep caverns and steep limestone cliffs the island was a natural fortress to any new adventurer. It is said Captain Cook and his men tried three times to make landing on the island but on all three occasions were repelled by ferocious and beastly indigenous warriors. Such was the tenacity and terrifying appearance of the warriors that Captain Cook gave up his quest for landing and politely coined the land "Savage Island". Today the island is known as "The Rock of Polynesia". And as they say the rest is history - "Savage Rock" unconquered to this day.
