Scarf Refugee Support Description

SCARF is an independent, not-for-profit, community based incorporated association, established to enhance the resettlement process of permanent resident status refugee entrants in the Illawarra Region of NSW.

Through our targeted and responsive programs, we support refugee entrants to overcome the challenges of resettlement, find their feet, rebuild their lives, and unlock their potential. Our programs include Education and Tutoring, Befriending, Learn to Drive, Continuous Adult Learning, and Social Support & Inclusion.

We are committed to equality of opportunity for all Humanitarian Visa entrants to strengthen individuals, families and communities and complement the work of the established service providers.

SCARF receives no ongoing government funding. Our committed members, volunteers and contributors are the heart and soul of SCARF. Without their time, talent and generosity, our current projects and initiatives would not happen.

We rely heavily on the donations, time, talent and resources of the local community and businesses to give life to our programs and projects! See our website at

School's back and wow! The students at St Mary's Star of the Sea College capped off Term 2 with an amazing fundraising effort raising over $700 for SCARF with their Champions of Welcome bake sale. Many students were involved - baking, bringing and buying delicious baked goods ūüćįūüėč There were so many yummy goodies the sale was extended and the leftovers provided to the students and volunteers at Homework Club! A huge thank you to the St Mary's girls - it's fantastic to see so many getting involved to help Wollongong become a place of warm welcome ūü§óūüß°ūüߣ We wish you all the best for Term 3 - especially those facing their HSC trials!

If you love food as much as we do, we've got some great news! ūüėćūüėõ We‚Äôve been selected to participate in Local Matters at Grill'd Wollongong this July!
Local Matters is the Grill’d community donation program where each Grill’d restaurant donates $500 back into the community each month. The donation is split between 3 local community groups, and the group with the most tokens at the end of the month receives the largest donation.
We’d love your help in helping others! Simply hea...d to Grill’d Wollongong during July for a burger and pop your Local Matters token in the SCARF jar.
It‚Äôs a simple (and delicious) way to show your support! ūüćĒūüĎÖ

Finding work can be a real challenge for refugee entrants that come to call Australia home. Yet people with refugee backgrounds are strong, resilient and highly motivated individuals, many bringing skills and qualifications from their home country.
These characteristics mean hiring people with refugee backgrounds can have a positive impact across the entire workforce. https://bit.ly/2KCCHLU

It's the final countdown before the end of financial year! The perfect time to support the causes you care about that make a real difference in people's lives. https://bit.ly/2tG7HAd
When Syrian-born sisters Yasmin & Sidrah first arrived in Wollongong 4 years ago, all they had were each other and their family for support.
But becoming involved in the SCARF community and being able to participate in a range of educational and friendship-based programs has been a positive step... forward. Although arrival was scary at first, now Yasmin says that "I feel that I really belong here."
You can help create more smiles for families like Yasmin & Sidrah's with a tax-deductible gift to SCARF. It’s one simple act that will make a real difference to families rebuilding their lives in the Illawarra.
Any amount, big or small, can make a difference. SCARF appreciates all the support ūüß°
If you'd like to make one last gift of support this financial year, please donate here by midnight tonight: https://bit.ly/2tG7HAd

A big thank you to the team at Officeworks Fairy Meadow who fundraised for SCARF during the month of May! It is always so heartwarming ūüíē to see the generosity of the community. SCARF is so grateful for all your support ūüôŹūüŹĽ

Smiles like these come with safety, community and the promise of a bright future.
Shay Meh and her family spent 13 years in a refugee camp on the Thai-Myanmar border before being accepted by Australia as refugee entrants.
On arrival in Australia Shay Meh and her family faced isolation and culture shock. But finding SCARF and being able to participate in social inclusion and adult learning activities has been a positive step for Shay Meh and her family for their new life in Au...stralia.
Shay Meh is now studying English and has the promise of a bright future for herself and her children.
You can create more smiles for mothers like Shay Meh with a gift to SCARF. It’s one simple act that will make a real difference to families rebuilding their lives in the Illawarra.
