A wonderful story on the power of an open and welcoming community....

School's back and wow! The students at St Mary's Star of the Sea College capped off Term 2 with an amazing fundraising effort raising over $700 for SCARF with their Champions of Welcome bake sale. Many students were involved - baking, bringing and buying delicious baked goods ūüćįūüėč There were so many yummy goodies the sale was extended and the leftovers provided to the students and volunteers at Homework Club! A huge thank you to the St Mary's girls - it's fantastic to see so many getting involved to help Wollongong become a place of warm welcome ūü§óūüß°ūüߣ We wish you all the best for Term 3 - especially those facing their HSC trials!

When Syrian-born sisters Yasmin & Sidrah first arrived in Wollongong 4 years ago, all they had were each other and their family for support.
But becoming involved in the SCARF community and being able to participate in a range of educational and friendship-based programs has been a positive step... forward. Although arrival was scary at first, now Yasmin says that "I feel that I really belong here."

Shay Meh and her family spent 13 years in a refugee camp on the Thai-Myanmar border before being accepted by Australia as refugee entrants.
On arrival in Australia Shay Meh and her family faced isolation and culture shock. But finding SCARF and being able to participate in social inclusion and adult learning activities has been a positive step for Shay Meh and her family for their new life in Au...stralia.
Shay Meh is now studying English and has the promise of a bright future for herself and her children.
