Society And Culture Association Description

Society and Culture was introduced into the NSW curriculum in 1985 with the first HSC examination in 1986. The process of developing this subject began in 1978 with the first Syllabus Committee meeting in 1981 and being chaired by Dr David Dufty, of the School of Education at the University of Sydney,
A number of academic committee members and consultants assisted in ensuring this new syllabus was characterised by rigour, conceptual vision, appropriate research methodologies and of course, the innovative Personal Interest Project. This Committee also included:
• Prof. Sol Encel, (Sociology), University of NSW
• Dr Chris Deer of Macquarie University (later Prof. of Teacher Education UTS)
• Dr Bob Young, and Associate Prof. David Smith (Education) University of Sydney
• Dr Terry Lovat, now Dean of Education of Newcastle University
• Prof. Colin Tatz, (Politics) Macquarie University
• Dr Ben Tipton, (Economic History) University of Sydney
• Dr Raja Jayaraman (Asian History) University of New England
• Mr Donald Boland (Philosophy) Aquinas Academy
• Dr Robert Hill (Social Education) Mitchell CAE, now Charles Sturt University, Bathurst.
In 1996, the passion and commitment for this subject amongst teachers, academics, past and current students as well as parents was very much evident. Dr David Dufty was commissioned by the Society and Culture Association to write and collate from submissions our stakeholders and advocates the story of this subject and its impact on educational practice in NSW and beyond. This resulted in the publication of "Society and Culture: A Significant Curriculum Innovation".

The Society and Culture Association journal, Culturescope is published and distributed to schools throughout the state. Our website at www. scansw.com. au provides resources and services for both teachers and students, including our PIP forum where questions regarding the PIP are answered by expert teachers, as well as information on our Professional Development opportunities and our very popular PIP and HSC Study Days.

Our charter is to support both regional and metropolitan schools. The S& C Association relies on a volunteer committee and our membership to support teaching and learning in this innovative and contemporary subject and the motivation that this excellent subject with such dedicated teachers and passionate students will continue inspire young minds now and into the future.
