In case a root canal treatment has failed and if failure of the RCT can be demonstrated, usually with x-rays, it is possible to do a surgical procedure to remove the offending root tip along with any abscess associated with it. This is referred to as an apicoectomy procedure. An apicoectomy is performed by cutting a soft tissue flap just above the tip of the root canal treated tooth, pun...cturing through the bone and amputating the root tip. This generally removes any offending dead (or living) tissue and often cures the problem. In some instances, the clinician may do a tiny apicoectomy cavity preparation at the tip of the root and seal off the rest of the canal with a tiny filling. If this is not possible, it may still be possible to melt some gutta percha at the tip of the root to seal it off. This is known as a retrofill (retro=from behind). Apicoectomies and retrofills are generally thought of as a last resort in an ongoing effort to save an otherwise hopeless endodontically treated tooth. #endo #surgery

Here I will tell you some of the problems that may occur from not replacing missing teeth. Such problems might range from movement of adjacent teeth and gum/bone loss around them which will make it more easier for calculus to build up on them and eventually make them loose. The teeth in the opposite side may over erupt which might make it more difficult for putting a replacement tooth. This over eruption of the teeth may cause problems in chewing and affect the jaw joints (TMJD). The teeth may tilt or move leading to spaces between other teeth which than may require orthodontic treatment to fix. So if possible be sure to get that space with the missing tooth replaced. #tgif

If you scrub too hard from side to side, you can run the risk of causing your gums to recede, as well as damaging the tooth enamel.
