About St Vincent'S Hospital, Sydney

St Vincent's Hospital Sydney is a leading teaching and research hospital that provides patient centred care to people from all walks of life.

St Vincent'S Hospital, Sydney Description

St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney is located in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst. Though funded and integrated into the New South Wales state public health system it is operated by St Vincent's Health Australia. It is affiliated with the University of New South Wales Medical School. HistorySt Vincent’s Hospital was established in 1857 by five Irish Sisters of Charity, who had migrated to Sydney in 1838 with a mission to help the poor and disadvantaged. Some of their early work included helping victims of the 1853 influenza outbreak, and families of prisoners in the nearby Darlinghurst Gaol. Three of the hospital’s founding sisters had trained as professional nurses in France, and they brought their knowledge to the colony, establishing a hospital that was free to all people, but especially for the poor, on a non-sectarian basis. The hospital was founded in the neighbouring suburb of Potts Point, on a site which is now St Vincent’s College. As demand grew a new hospital with 150 beds was built on its present site in Victoria Street, Darlinghurst in 1870. The architect was Oswald Lewis. The building was remodelled and enlarged after World War I and is now known as the De Lacy building after one of the founding sisters.

Today we opened our new Haematology & Bone Marrow Transplant ward and we couldn't be happier! The new 20 bed unit provides each patient with private, negative air pressure rooms - minimising infection risk and providing patients and their loved ones with much needed privacy at a vulnerable time in their lives.
Thank you to St Vincent's Curran Foundation and all of our generous donors who made this a reality. We're so thrilled!

St Vincent's is very proud to now be offering Telehealth services to our patients.
This is particularly exciting news for our patients from rural and remote locations or those interstate. It will save patients' time, associated travel costs and separation from support networks.
Take a look at our weblink below and if you have any questions, get in touch, or ask your clinical team.

St Vincent's is proud to participate in the Share the Dignity drive, collecting donations of sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups, incontinence pads & specialist sanitary underwear for women in our community who are unable to meet the financial burden of their menstrual cycle.
We have bright pink drop-off boxes located around the hospital and are taking donations until the end of August. If you're coming in and see a pink box, feel free to help us provide some dignity to those in need. Or see https://www.sharethedignity.com.au/ for more info on how to help this wonderful cause.

The Ice Street Project is an annual photography program for residents of Tierney House, our homeless health residential units.
The project is geared towards emotional healing for some of our most marginalised members of community, giving them a voice through photography, creativity & learning new skills.
These lovely images are just a small sample of the many on display now at St Vincent’s level 4 corridor art space.
... Come vote for your fave. The 12 most voted images will feature in the 2019 Ice Street Project calendar for sale later in the year. Proceeds of which keep the project running. 📷

Caritas is our acute in-patient mental health unit here at St Vincent's. Often our patients come in with very little, and no support people in their lives.
Being able to offer new, clean underwear and warm socks contributes to their dignity during their stay with us. But we're running very low in stocks and we would very much appreciate donations of new socks and underwear for both men and women, of all sizes.
Socks with non-slip “tread” would be amazing, but all donations a...re so welcome.
If you can help, donations can be left at the O’Brien Centre Reception, next to St Vincent's Hospital on the corner of Victoria and Burton Streets (the building with the big yellow flower out front).
Thank you so much. 🙏

Today we farewell our dear friend and colleague, Jono.
Jono has manned the front desk at St Vincent's since 1988. He's greeted countless nervous patients, given directions to everyone (including staff), and provided invaluable information to all who walk through our doors.
"I will miss this place like crazy" Jono says. And we'll miss him too.
... Happy retirement Jono. Thank you for being the face of St Vincent's for the past 30 years. What a great face it is.

I was there with my friend who was taken to ER with a breathing difficulty.

The nurses were all very fake with their smiles and condescending comments.

My friend had an x ray and blood tests done within an hour of arriving but had to wait more than 3 hours for s CT scan! And that happened after we saw another girl who came in way after us and she had her x ray before our CT scan! We complained and was told that it's the middle of the night and there's only one guy in x ray doing the entire hospital.

Sure but I took a photo of how un-busy the ER was: staff had to time to joke, chat, and most of all, eat! Every 10 minutes there's always someone eating!

Stupid senior doctor said "I'll go find out what's taking so long for the CT scan" and never came back!

One nurse said "you should go home. Your friend will be here till morning" and less than 30 seconds later, the doctor said "shouldn't be long".

Should see the attitude change after we told the doctor we didn't want to take his advice and wait there for at least another 3 hours until he could ring our doctor in another hospital in the morning. No more smiles.

Poor communication, pathetic follow up (basically none) and un-professional service attitude!

This used to be such a respected hospital! Not any more!
