Steampunk Vagabonds

About Steampunk Vagabonds

Drawing influences from Vaudeville, Bellydance, Tribal, Celtic and World Fusion, Illawarra dance troupe the Steampunk Vagabonds have gained a reputation for their elaborate costuming, vintage styling, and entertaining sets.

Steampunk Vagabonds Description

The Steampunk Vagabonds grew from a desire by the director of Astarte Studio to push the creative boundaries of belly dance and world fusion.

Our story began with an exploration of vintage belly dance and burlesque, which led us to a fascination with the stages of Vaudeville. We wanted to create performances outside the safe box of our classical belly dance technique, and began to create choreographies fusing burlesque, circus, and a splash of carnival.

We took a series of lessons in basic hoop technique with Donna Dee, integrating hoop tricks into our dance performances, as well as workshops in poi technique with Debra Napier.

The steampunk genre lent itself beautifully to the worlds of fusion and fantasy we were eager to explore, providing an ever revolving and evolving platform for the exploration of different props, fantastic costuming, and a whole new genre of music.

We perform as both a professional and community troupe, with our members interchanging depending on the performances and events.
