Sydney City Police Area Command Description

Sydney City PAC combines the historical Local Area Commands of City Central and The Rocks, taking in the northern, central and southern areas of the Sydney Central Business District (CBD), and Pyrmont to the west of the CBD.


Populations
Census data from 2011 provides the following;
53127 persons indicated that their primary place of residence is within the postcodes 2000, 2007 and 2009.

City of Sydney statistical data indicates that on any given day, on average there are 380, 000 persons working within Sydney City PAC.

A further estimate provides that an additional 483, 000 people attend the Sydney CBD on a daily basis for shopping, education or to be provided with entertainment.

There are approximately 300 hotels (accommodation) within Sydney City PAC, servicing on average 350 rooms per hotel.
Running at 75% capacity (average occupancy rate) provides for an additional 100, 000 persons in the CBD on any given day. This of course fluctuates with seasonal or planned activities and can often rise to 210, 000 additional persons per day within the CBD. (Not inclusive of backpacker accommodation or serviced apartments).
With population, workers and tourists converging on the CBD, there is potential to have up to and beyond 1 million persons in the CBD daily, without factoring in planned events and seasonal activities. Sydney CBD services approximately 20, 000 individual businesses.

Licensed Premises
As of August 2013, Sydney City PAC serviced 1017 Licensed premises, 188 of which operate 24 under 24 hour trade and 166 of which have hotel licences. The following figures are placed in comparison;
Kings Cross – 305 LP, 15 with 24 hour trade
Newcastle City – 335 LP, 46 with 24 hour trade
Surry Hills – 327 LP, 26 with 24 hour trade

Significant Infrastructure

Located within the Sydney City PAC are national icons and tourist attractions which attract global attention, including The Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge

Events

Various religious events, Food / Wine festivals, entertainment festivals, cultural events and organisational events occur in the PAC including, New Years Eve, Chinese New Year, Mardi-Gras and Vivid Festival.

These are ‘scheduled’ events, which are able to be planned for and an appropriate response dictated.

There are a large amount of ‘unplanned’ events / protests which occur within Sydney City PAC which require a response at short notice.

Education
There are 14 schools / education facilities with the commands. This is inclusive of public and private schools, as well as the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Sydney Grammar School.

Religious Centres
There are a number of small churches within both commands, of different denominations. Of importance are;
• St Marys Cathedral
• St Andrews Cathedral
• The Great Synagogue
• Church of Scientology

St Marys and St Andrews Cathedrals are the most iconic churches within the command and indeed the state, attracting significant crowds and at times requiring a large police response for traffic and crowd management. Both host a variety of events of state significance (Funerals, Memorials, etc).

Housing NSW
Current figures suggest that there are 830 Housing NSW premises in the Sydney City PAC.
These consist of detached premises, apartments and town house style dwellings.
