1971 - A total of 142 spectators were arrested as part of anti-apartheid protests during a NSW v South Africa rugby match.
1954 - Rugby league referee Aub Oxford abandoned a match between NSW and England after an all-in brawl involving 16 players.

FINALLY! #OnThisDay 27.6.1993 | The Sydney Swans ended one of the longest losing streaks in the history of Australian Football by beating a strong Melbourne side by 23.11.149 to 16.13.109. It was their first win since May 8 the previous year and followed 26 consecutive losses.
The Swans’ man of the match was undoubtedly the full-forward Richard Osborne who kicked 10 of his side’s 23 goals. The match was evenly contested until the main break, when the Swans held a lead of just... 3 points. In a resounding third quarter, the Swans kicked 10 goals to ensure an emphatic victory – six of them from Osborne’s boot. ‘The monkey has been lifted off our backs’, Osborne said after the game.
The result was a personal victory for the Swans’ new coach, Ron Barassi, although he afterwards played down his part in it. Ironically, the Swans’ long-awaited win was at the expense of Barassi’s old club.
25 years later, the mighty Bloods are one of the big contenders in 2018. Get behind them Sydney!

#FlashbackFriday - The first NSW Blues match was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) against New Zealand during this week in 1909.
Dally Messenger was a standout in the Blues' 35-10 victory in front of a crowd of 50,000. The team gave three cheers to King George V after he decided to move his coronation day to the Showground next door.

Around this time in 1947, the SCG said goodbye to the century-old roller, pulled by a horse that wore heavy leather shoes to protect the pitch.
It was a laborious operation, which involved groundsmen carrying a bucket to catch any droppings. In the 1920s a groundsman named Jack Hoy used his hat in the absence of a bucket.
After taking a bow, Hoy put the hat back on his head after emptying the contents, much to the delight of the crowd. #LoveOurSCG
