Is your honey 100% Australian? Or only 30%?
If you're not already aware, new Country of Origin labelling laws have been in effect since 2016. A two year transition period has been in place, but becomes mandatory on 1st July 2018. This means food products packaged for retail sale from 1st July 2018 MUST display the new labels.
You may have already noticed the new labels on some products. Whilst there are some exceptions (for example, tea, confectionary, biscuits, snack foods...) honey sold in a retail setting will be required to adhere to the new law.
What does this mean for beekeepers who sell their bottled honey to stores or at markets?
Honey you pack after 1st July 2018 must include the new label. The ACCC has an online tool which will generate the new logo for you for free. You can find it here:
http://www.originlabeltool.business.gov.a u
What does this mean for consumers?
It means businesses can no longer hide behind the previous statement of 'Made in Australia from local or imported ingredients' which implies it may have all Australian ingredients, some Australian ingredients, or none at all. A very ambiguous statement. Just how much of a product IS Australian, will now be much clearer.
Look for honey labels that state 'Made in Australia from 100% Australian ingredients' or 'Product of Australia', or better yet, support your local beekeepers and know exactly where your honey is from.

The surge in demand for already scarce beeswax has not only caused the prices to increase dramatically, it's also caused 'fake' beeswax to hit the Australian market.
