Vladimir Ashkenazy returns to the SSO to conduct a Romantic program inspired by the greatest love story of all.
Ashkenazy begins this concert with one of his favourite orchestral pieces. Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet fantasy overture is possibly, he says, the very best musical reflection of Shakespeare’s tragedy ever composed. But if it has a competitor, it’s Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet music. The timeless tale of young love brings out Prokofiev’s romantic soul and h...is gift for irresistible melodies, and Ashkenazy has chosen some the best-loved highlights from the concert suites to make a musical drama that begins with the sounds of an ancient feud (Montagues and Capulets) and ends with the death of the two lovers. Between these two masterpieces, Arabella Steinbacher will bring her confident virtuosity and gorgeous tone to Bruch’s first violin concerto, the Romantic showstopper that’s still at the top of listener polls 150 years after its premiere.

★★★★½ “The Sydney Symphony reached white heat in this movement and I don’t think I’ve ever heard an orchestra play with such manic abandon.” Thanks, Limelight Magazine! See Mahler Six conducted by Simone Young tonight and tomorrow night only: http://bit.ly/2nlZMFG

Benjamin Grosvenor in Recital Rising star Benjamin Grosvenor makes his SSO debut with an elegant and evocative piano recital.
If you were lucky enough to hear the then 20-year-old Grosvenor in Sydney in 2012, you’ll know this is a recital that will highlight his distinctive gifts. The cheerful effervescence of Bach and Mozart calls for clarity and crisp articulation, Chopin’s Barcarolle for lilting grace, and his lyricism and ability to sustain atmosphere will come to the for...e in music from France and Spain. Granados – inspired by the paintings of the young Goya – captures the “essence” of Spain in music that’s elegant, moody and richly coloured. Grosvenor has chosen ‘The Flirtations’, a lively take on a popular love song, and the most celebrated piece in the collection: ‘Complaints, or The Maja and the Nightingale.’ The recital ends with Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit – it is famously virtuosic but what touches the ear and the heart are its evocations of cascading water and spine-tingling hints of the sinister.

Mahler wrote the finale to Symphony No. 6 including three monumental blows of a giant hammer. Out of fear, one was deleted. Simone Young, has chosen to restore the final note of this great symphony for dramatic power. Mahler Six opens this evening: http://bit.ly/2nlZMFG

Our Young Ambassador, Sarah Bradley, awed us with her incredible digital illustration of the Sydney Opera House's Concert Hall! Using a graphics tablet and a stylus she put the artwork together using a drawing program on her computer. Thank you for sharing this with us Sarah!

Tom Thum, the man with the orchestra in his mouth, fronts the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in a concert that will leave you amazed.
Beatboxer Tom Thum wowed audiences at TEDxSydney in 2013. (The video from that presentation is approaching 60 million views.) Armed with just a microphone, this magnificently talented dude produced an inexhaustible vocal inventory of glorious and weird noises, not to mention some favourite classical tunes. Now, teaming up with composer Gordon Hamilt...on, he’s taken it to the next level, smooshing together the sounds of a real-life orchestra with all the surprising possibilities of beatboxing.
Come and discover some wild and astonishing sounds when we perform Thum Prints, a concerto (sorry, contradiction!) for beatboxer and orchestra.
Join us for our free Kids Activity Zone in the Sydney Opera House Northern Foyer for an hour after the performance – where technology, music and play come together!
Suitable for ages 5+ and their families

Principal Cello Katie Hewgill introduces a program of music that has inspired her during her career.
Katie Hewgill is a much-loved stalwart of the orchestra she joined in 1989. Her beloved cello has been coming to work for longer than that – the instrument was made in 1729 by Carlo Tononi. And Katie begins her playlist in the same decade with Bach’s Third Brandenburg. There’s more baroque music with Vivaldi’s virtuoso showcase for two cellos. But it’s not all dazzle: the gentle, songlike third movement from Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony is like a musical plea for peace. These are just some of the pieces that have inspired Katie during her career and which she will introduce on the night.
Join us at the bar after the concert for a drink with the musicians!
