Synonymous Medlow Bath was embarrassing and uncomfortable.

After having coffee, we went up to pay at the counter, where I asked for a piece of raspberry liquorice to go. The staff member opened the jar for me and asked me to choose the piece I wanted. With no utensils in the jar, around the jar, or provide or any other option to pick one, the staff member insisted on picking a piece to go. I carefully picked a piece with my hand.

I was suddenly loudly scolded like a child by another staff member, where I was told I would "need to buy the whole jar!", because "we don't know where your hands have been!", and "other people might like to eat that without dirty hands touching it!". I was embarrassed and shocked, I paid in full and left.

After a moment, I did go back into the cafe and discreetly told the person who scolded me how embarrassing the situation was, how there were no utensils and I was directed to pick a piece.

I work with many cafes around the Blue Mountains and Sydney. I was going to make a comment about how ironic a brand with the name Synonymous should have better customer service otherwise they will be synonymous with it. Or how I was scolded about hygiene when the cooks in the open kitchen don't wear proper hospitality wear or hair nets, or the muffins sitting on the counter in the open. However, I don't see the point, the situation was disgusting and I won't be returning. While I was not offered a refund, I got a great story out the encounter and will tell everyone I can about what happened, advising against both Synonymous and Anonymous.
