As we recognise the invaluable contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women as part of this year’s NAIDOC week celebrations, it is worth noting that the 2018 TAFE Digital Student of the Year, Georgie Higgins, is a Kamilaroi lady. Georgie is from Inverell and completed a Certificate III in Dental Assisting and Certificate IV in Oral Health with TAFE Digital. According to our TAFE Digital Data Specialist, currently 10% of our students at TAFE Digital identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Georgie Higgins wins prestigious TAFE Digital Student of the Year and Equity and Youth Achievement Awards.
While Georgie Higgins was completing her Certificate III in Dental Assisting and as a scholar with the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, she was also independently completing her Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (Oral Health Promotion). This included traveling to Sydney from Inverell for blocks of practical sessions. “Georgie was a pleasure to teach, was a standou...t student who submitted a high level of written work for every assessment and was quick to develop new skills,” said Suzanne Aked, TAFE Digital Dental Teacher.

Serena Saliba decided she wanted to formalise her qualifications to pursue her career in Librarianship after taking on a Library Assistant position at the Australian Catholic University (ACU). “TAFE Digital provided me with the most appealing and practical option for study, as I needed flexible and convenient options. The number of practical tasks meant that any feedback I received from TAFE Digital facilitators was directly applied in my field of work,” said Serena.

After years of trying to find a career she would love, Rebecca Francis chose to do a Diploma of Building Design. Her studies included low to medium density residential and commercial building design projects from conceptual design through to working drawings with a focus on sustainability. “Rebecca has an excellent understanding of architectural design principles, demonstrated in her coursework. Melanie Gabbusch dreamed of becoming a Travel Consultant, but as a stay at home mother of four boys with a husband who is home two weeks a month due to his fly in, fly out job, she never thought her dream would become a reality. “After completing the first five units, I needed to put my studies on hold to care for my sister for three years,” said Mel. Mel re-enrolled in the Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management in 2017 and her determination motivated her to complete the course in only eight months. “With only one unit left to complete, I applied for, and was offered a job with the Flight Centre Group. Latia Clift chose to study two Diplomas in Mental Health and a Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), after being diagnosed with a medical condition which links into this field of study. She was able to complete the two Diplomas in a record eight months! “My greatest career achievement to date is having received the Employer of the Month Award four times in the past 12 months through Konekt Limited and my input into a work campaign focusing on returning clients to the workforce that has increased by 12.8% in three months,” said Latia.
