Are you looking for the right school or praying for the right school? If the latter this is the place. Tangara is routinely one of the top 5 or 10 schools in the state for something NAPLAN calls "student gain". That is, after one controls (as best one can) for the innate brightness of the students, does the school improve them above and beyond? Many high ATAR schools actually look poor on this measure in that only because they take in a lot of bright students do they pump out high scores. The real challenge is improving the students who are there (rather than only letting in the ones expected to get high ATARs). Tangara takes average students and makes them above average. It takes above average students and makes them well above average. And it still has it's share of 99 ATAR students, too. The formula for this success is two things: 1) the mentoring/tutorial system and 2) the Catholic ethos. Every two weeks our daughters meet with their mentor/tutor who tracks student progress. Part of this process is that behavioural/social problems the girls have get discovered and addressed well before they get out of hand. The net result is a girls' school that is remarkably less catty than others we have known. Tangara is technically not a Catholic school, but the Catholic ethos is so well engrained it is more Catholic than any "official" Catholic school I can think of. It is the kind of place where Mass is offered daily, is well attended, and many girls (and their parents) go one day a week. Due to these two factors, there are few distractions for the girls and the teachers can actually focus on teaching.
