I am NOT saying this to diminish Amie's point of view...let me say that right out of the gate. What I AM saying is that it's very important to contextualize what she says here. Her background as a ballerina from a well-to-do background, the fact that she performs in high-end venues like 5-star hotels...considering all of this, it makes absolute sense why she would expect a firm distance between audience and performer, why she would frown on tipping, and why she would be offended for audience members to request songs. I think most dancers in the West, performing in a concert setting, would hold similar expectations.
For Egyptian performers from other backgrounds, performing in different social contexts, many of the criteria she outlines are simply not up for discussion. Consider, for example, this wedding performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa7GH7juI cg This violates most of Amie's criteria. But in this social context, the role of the dancer is not merely to be an artist...it is to be a part of the celebration and to bring happiness...and that includes a great deal of direct interaction with the guests. This doesn't mean that this dancer is somehow "less than" for doing these things. Really, Egyptian dancers face an enormous struggle socially/culturally no matter whether they are a ghaziyah dancing in a rural village, a sha'abi dancer performing in a Cairo street wedding, or a ballet-trained dancer performing in a 5-star hotel. It's just that each context is different and carries its own set of challenges and expectations.
I guess that's all I'm saying here...consider a broad range of perspectives...and context is everything!"
