The Mustang is regarded by many as the best all-around fighter of World War II. Australia was the only country outside the United States to build Mustangs, with the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation delivering 200 to the RAAF based on the P-51D's design.

Barbara served with the 58th Searchlight Brigade and was posted to Western Australia where she used searchlights for coastal defence, rescue and various other exercises with the RAAF. As a commissioned officer she was responsible for a troop of female operators. Here she tells of working (and flying) with the RAAF on searchlight exercises. #UnsungHeroes #veterans #memory #temoraaviationmuseum

Our Spitfire is painted in the green and grey camouflage colours worn by RAAF aircraft when it defended Darwin during World War II and in operations in the South West Pacific. This Spitfire is one of only two still flying in Australia, both of which reside here at the Temora Aviation Museum. Thank you Graeme Reid‎ for sharing.

The RAAF’s fleet of 33 Hawks perform the important lead-in fighter trainer role, preparing new fast jet pilots for their move to the operational squadrons flying Hornets, Super Hornets, Growlers and - soon - F-35A Lightning IIs.
