Recommendation of the Week!
What was the best comedy in 2017? The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, that's what. A young Jewish housewife and mother in the 60's decides to tackle the male dominated world of stand-up comedy. What could possibly go wrong. I binge watched the whole season in a day, and haven't laughed that hard in years. -Matt Costin

For something very different, hauntingly, beautifully sparse, and yet shatteringly universal in its reach - I recommend checking out Spring Summer Autumn Winter, and Spring. It's a Korean film about self transformation that captivated me with its simplicity and quietude. While making a powerful point, it allows us to reconnect to ourselves as well. -Matt Costin

Not for everyone, but District 9, the racial prejudice film masquerading as a sci-fi action film is rich in multiple audience appreciation moments, happening at the same time. It's masterfully directed - and created with the intention of teaching us something very profound about ourselves, and how self-righteousness leads to serious consequences.

A lesson from one of our amazing teachers, Matt Costin:
As actors - our natural inclination is to WATCH what we DO - as we are doing it. But unfortunately, this habit produces lifeless acting! But why, you ask? Wouldn’t a clear focus on my every moment, ensure the character and story is correct?
... Let’s ask acting genius, and dearly departed Professor Snape, AKA Alan Rickman, for his advice!
“... if you’re trying to reproduce life... All one wants to see from an actor, is the intensity and accuracy of their listening. And then what you have to say will become automatic. Then it will be free and alive...”
Mr Rickman’s challenge to us, is to become accurate and intense listeners - But WHY does listening make us alive? My answer - DISCOVERY.
We already know the other actor's dialogue. We already know our dialogue. We have built the various layers, including want, importance and relationship. However, these are all KNOWN QUANTITIES. There is little left to discover.
In real life, we never know what is going to happen next. We are constantly surprised by everything that happens, more or less - and then we respond.
However in acting - the only UNKNOWN QUANTITY is the behaviour of the other person. Not the dialogue! BEHAVIOUR!
We never know how they are going to feel, what they are going to think, what emotion will play across their face, or what their body language will tell us.
By giving the other person's behaviour our close attention - we receive a constant stream of original, powerful new moments. And if we allow each moment to affect our senses and our heart - it will bring us truly alive.
By listening, we are automatically changed by what we discover. And we are organically driven to take new action.
Listening, first and foremost - drives the story forwards. Treat the other person as the primary window into living truthfully in your imaginary circumstance. They will always give you everything you need in the moment.
Let go of self-control - and allow the other person to become your rollercoaster ride of discovery!
Love Matt!

If you didn't see Call Me By Your Name - watch it - to undergo a master class in tonal storytelling. The writer set the director, cast and editor, the arduous task of creating a walk-away effect in the audience, opposite to the way the story ends. How? Watch it and see if you can work it out. You'll learn a lot about not only character arc, but most importantly the positive/negative emotional compass of the audience. -Matt Costin

If you haven't seen Crazy Stupid Love, do yourself a favour and indulge in the rich and deliciously adorable chemistry of Gosling and Stone. Helped with some great work by Steve Carell - you'll laugh in hysterics and yet fall in love at the same time. -Matt Costin

Reccomendation of the Week!
If you haven't seen Penny Dreadful - do it, for the unmatched twisted soul of Eva Green's Vanessa Ives. Never before has demonic possession been so frighteningly real and yet superbly fragile. Combined with the incredible character work of Rory Kinnear as The Creature, and Billie Piper as the wonderful Byron - it's a great journey of redemption. Matt Costin

Reccomendation Monday!
Parker Posie's transformation into the infamous Dr Smith on Netflix's reimagining of Lost In Space - is truly a worthwhile watch.
Effortlessly stealing every scene she's in, with powerful listening wholly in-character, and her deeply complex and conflicted inner world - makes watching this new release such a joy!
... Highly Recommend by Matt!
