The Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan Description

Unveiled in1988 to celebrate the Bicentenary of Australia, the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan is Australia’s largest botanic garden and the most popular tourist attraction in south-western Sydney, attracting 336, 000 visitors annually.

The Garden encompasses 416 hectares and is a home to more than 2, 000 species of Australian native flora, including critically-endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland. You’ll also find a spectacular collection of themed gardens full of wonderful, easy-to-achieve ideas for you to try at home.

Relax and unwind on the lakeside lawns, take a walk of discovery to our prized Wollemi pine collection, seize the challenge of our mountain bike trail and enjoy the Garden’s abundant birdlife.

Whether you’re a local resident or visiting us from further afield, make the Australian Botanic Garden your garden to enjoy year-round!

The way we were - First major garden display off the rank was the Terrace Garden (now the Connections Garden). It began as a 4.5 hectare hillside that was reshaped into a series of terraces to display the evolution of Australian native plants. Over 2500 species of native plants were to be set out in family groups representing an evolutionary sequence from those with primitive features to the more advanced. Starting with ferns, conifers and cycads, to flowering plants, a winding 1.5 km walking track would lead to the summit and sweeping views of the Garden. Unfortunately, in early 1988 a storm caused major damage to the newly terraced area and 3000 hours of labour were required to repair it for the opening. http://bit.ly/visitABG #ABGturns30
