Service was great but unfortunately that's where it ends. Prices are ludicrous (which I suppose is standard in the Hunter Valley where everyone seems to operate with extraordinary markups). Food is definitely not to the standard the prices would suggest - nor the bulk of the reviews on here (maybe many of the reviewers are locals and thus genuinely believe it is of high standard?)

We had a wide variety of dishes, none of which were impressive and only one of which was actually tasty (the confit duck - although it came with a small pastry that had no business being on that dish, and the sauce was far too salty with nothing else to balance it). The worst dish award went to the haloumi and pumpkin cigars - not sure I've ever encountered a more confused dish. Wine list was comprehensive but far too expensive - some wines on the list were being sold minutes' away from the restaurant to the general public for up to $30-50 less for a bottle.

The scotch steak was supurb. Not many wines on the list but good enough.

Was very happy with our dinner. Lovely ambience esp in the cooler weather with the large fire place in the middle of the restaurant. Delicious food. Had grilled king prawns and was very tasty and well done. Perfect portion sizes. The only negative was the garlic bread which were thin crispy slices of bread..more like a biscuit. Lovely service and well priced! Would definitely come back.

You won't be disappointed! The Cellar has amazing food, atmosphere and friendly staff who were so helpful. You must try the zucchini flowers as entree they are amazing.

Great position and great food. Medium plus pricing.

Toilets were not to the standard of a restaurant charging the money that it does. Food and service were great.

By far the worst dining experience of the year. Our waitress was simply appalling, and after serving me badly oxygenated wine actually argued with me about it. The cuisine is little more than average pub food, served with over priced buckets of sides such as poorly prepared and flavorless broccoli. Along with my over cooked steak we endured some of the worst prawns we have ever tasted which came swimming in butter and we're so over cooked that it was very hard to pull them from their shells. This might all sound like whinging but when you spend more than $200 on a dinner and leave wishing you'd just gone to the local pub instead, it'll leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Modern australian restaraunt at HVG. Great wine list.

There were 4 of us for dinner on Saturday night 27/08/2016. The mains were tasty however the mash potato had too much garlic. The dessert was the biggest disappointment for us. It was the "Eton Mess" ~ Vanilla panna cotta, meringue, strawberry jellies and sprinkles. The portion size was very small compared to the price and the presentation left a lot to be desired. Not sure what the chef was trying to achieve however it was not restaurant quality. There was nothing on the menu that tempted me for dessert which I was looking forward to. Has there been a change of chef recently as when I was there earlier in the year my husband and I had the best meal ever. I would be interested to know why there is no consistency in the standard of food and portion size.

I took my parents here when visiting from the UK following the positive online reviews I'd seen.

However, we left very disappointed given the prices not matching with quality of food or service.

The setting is very nice but it took over an hour before we were served mains, we had to chase for drinks after the first order and the majority of food served was cold. As another user noted, the chips also seemed to be from frozen.

I would not return or recommend.
